Popular San Diego Hawaiian Eatery Kalei’s Kitchenette To Host Spam Musubi Eating Contest & Cultural Festival

Kalei’s Kitchenette, the beloved Hawaiian fusion eatery in San Diego's Rancho Peñasquitos, is celebrating its second anniversary with a community-focused festival featuring a spam musubi eating contest, cultural performances, and family-friendly fun - all while raising funds for a local cause.

On Saturday, June 21, from 11am to 3pm, Kalei’s will host its "Aloha All June" celebration outside the restaurant at 9926-F Carmel Mountain Road. The event is free to attend and will feature performances by the San Diego Hula Academy, keiki art activities led by Global Art San Diego, a raffle for a family meal package, and the main attraction - a competitive spam musubi eating contest open to the public.

A portion of all sales from the event will be donated to the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council, a local nonprofit dedicated to organizing community events and advocating for neighborhood interests. The donation will directly support the Town Council’s summer fundraising efforts and help fund year-round initiatives.

"Two years ago, we opened with a dream of sharing authentic Maui flavors while building community connections," said Chef and Owner Andy Mangiduyos. "Watching our neighbors support local causes through our fundraisers proves that food brings people together."
Since opening its doors in June 2023, Kalei's Kitchenette has donated over $3,000 to local nonprofits through community partnerships and special events. The restaurant, founded by Andy and Khara Mangiduyos, began as a catering venture and quickly evolved into a neighborhood favorite for its hearty Hawaiian staples like Huli Huli chicken, loco moco, Kalua pork, and their signature Spam musubi.

"Every plate we serve on June 21 helps support an organization that makes our community stronger," added co-owner Khara Mangiduyos.

With live entertainment, island flavors, and a strong community spirit, Kalei’s anniversary celebration promises to be a vibrant showcase of local pride and Aloha hospitality. Those looking to participate in the musubi eating contest must register online
