Founded by chef-restaurateur Santos Uy at the outset of the pandemic in March 2020, For The Win emerged from the pivot of Papilles - a Michelin Bib Gourmand bistro - into a smashburger and fried chicken sandwich operation. Uy, a lifelong food and wine lover and co-founder of Downtown L.A.’s Mignon wine bar and the seafood-forward Lost At Sea, developed a burger that has earned praise for its lacy, crisp-edged patties, buttery potato buns, and savory house sauce.
The PB outpost will open in the former Lucha Libre Taco Shop space. Expect a menu centered around thin, flavorful patties griddled to a crisp, layered with melty cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and drizzled with signature fry sauce - served on a soft Martin's potato roll. In addition to classic burger options, there will also be a selection of fried chicken sandwiches, fries, loaded fries, shakes, and brussels sprouts. Seating will be limited, favoring takeout and quick counter‑style meals, echoing For The Win’s L.A. footprint.
This marks the chain's first San Diego location and continues its meteoric expansion after triumphs in Glendale, Whittier, Grand Central Market, and Beverly Center, among others, with more on the way. Santos Uy’s culinary journey - from Papilles to wine bars to smashburgers - brings a refined yet relaxed sensibility to fast-casual fare.
For The Win is expected to open this summer at 1037 Garnet Avenue in San Diego's Pacific Beach. For more information, visit forthewinla.com.
