San Diego's LOLA 55 To Close Carlsbad Outpost, Focus Shifts To Downtown Flagship, La Jolla, & Upcoming Liberty Station Expansion

LOLA 55, the Michelin-recognized modern taqueria known for its elevated take on Mexican street food, has announced it will permanently close its Carlsbad location after less than two years in business. The decision marks the end of a chapter for the North County outpost, which was LOLA 55’s first major expansion beyond its flagship East Village location.

In a statement shared via social media, the team behind LOLA 55 described the closure as a "tough call," citing "challenges that have been unique to this location." While no further details were provided, the announcement emphasized a continued commitment to the brand’s future and invited guests to stop by for celebratory specials during the remaining days.

"We’d love to celebrate with you these next two weeks," the post reads. "Keep an eye out for specials as we make the most of our final days together."

Despite the impending Carlsbad closure, LOLA 55’s other locations remain in operation and expansion plans are forging ahead. The original East Village taqueria - opened in 2018 by Tijuana native and former restaurant executive Frank Vizcarra - remains a downtown favorite and is currently undergoing a transformation into a full-service restaurant, complete with a taco omakase experience and expanded entrée offerings. LOLA 55 also recently opened a scaled-down spinoff called L55 Tacos & More inside the Westfield UTC mall, with more locations of the fast-casual offshoot expected to launch throughout the region.

Meanwhile, a new full-service LOLA 55 is on track to open in Liberty Station later this summer. The expansive 8,800-square-foot space, designed by renowned Mexico City firm JSa Architects, will feature indoor and outdoor dining, a full bar with agave-forward cocktails, and a menu that includes signature tacos alongside new wood-fired dishes and seasonal specials.

Though the Carlsbad restaurant will soon shutter, the LOLA 55 brand appears far from slowing down. As the team pivots focus toward its core locations and ambitious new projects, loyal fans throughout San Diego still have plenty to look forward to.

LOLA 55's final day at 7720 El Camino Real in San Diego's North County community of Carlsbad will be Saturday, August 10. For more information, visit lola55.com.
