Roma Norte was conceived as a Mexico City-inspired experiment in precision mixology, but it struggled to build a consistent following in a part of San Diego that has long been hit-or-miss for nightlife. The bar drew early attention for its technique-driven approach and even secured a James Beard semifinalist nod, but the accolades did not translate into lasting commercial success. The closure underscores the challenges of sustaining standalone cocktail concepts in a city where bars often rely on either heavy tourist traffic or established neighborhood support. After its final service, the space will be absorbed back into neighboring Puesto for private dining and events.
Rather than attempt to revive Roma Norte elsewhere, Puesto is redirecting its attention to future projects. Among them is a new Mediterranean-inspired restaurant currently called Icaria - or possibly Ikaria - which is under construction in La Jolla near The Lodge at Torrey Pines. Slated to open in 2026, the forthcoming venue is named after the Greek island known for its longevity and "Blue Zone" lifestyle, suggesting an emphasis on healthful eating and coastal themes.
The striking red-framed, A-frame structure rising off Callan Road is already drawing notice from locals for its size and prominent location near Torrey Pines Golf Course. When completed, Icaria/Ikaria is expected to add to Puesto Hospitality’s growing portfolio of restaurants, which spans modern Mexican in Puesto, Italian in Marisi, and soon Mediterranean cuisine.
Roma Norte's last day of business at 789 W Harbor Drive, Unit 155, in San Diego's The Headquarters at Seaport is August 30. For more information, visit romanorte.bar.
