“After 5.5 incredible years of flipping pancakes, sharing laughs, and building community, we must say goodbye,” the farewell post read. “Flap Your Jacks is officially closed, effective immediately. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for every visit, smile, and memory made.”
Founded by brothers Ilan and Marcos Wornovitzky along with hospitality veteran Raul Esses, Flap Your Jacks quickly gained attention for its interactive griddle-at-your-table concept. The 4,200-square-foot restaurant at 3020 University Avenue featured a modern, light-filled dining room accented by an art installation of hundreds of spatulas suspended from the ceiling, as well as mezzanine seating for larger parties. Its distinctive exterior, designed to resemble syrup dripping down a stack of pancakes, became a recognizable landmark in North Park.
Guests could select from housemade pancake batters such as buttermilk, red velvet, banana bread, and peanut butter, then flip their creations on tabletop griddles and customize them with toppings, mix-ins, and syrups. Vegan and gluten-free options were available alongside a wide-ranging brunch menu that included chilaquiles, Benedicts, sandwiches, salads, cocktails, and fresh-pressed juices. The format proved a hit with families, groups, and brunch enthusiasts seeking a more hands-on dining experience.
The restaurant opened just days before the COVID-19 pandemic forced widespread shutdowns in March 2020, yet Flap Your Jacks managed to persevere through a turbulent hospitality climate and built a loyal following. Over the years, it became a popular spot for birthdays, family outings, and weekend brunch crowds in one of San Diego’s most competitive dining districts.
The closure drew an outpouring of reaction online, with customers and fellow restaurateurs lamenting the loss of what many described as a “core memory” destination. Patrons recalled special occasions celebrated at the restaurant and praised its community spirit.
No details have been released about what prompted the sudden shutdown or what may take its place. For now, Flap Your Jacks leaves behind five and a half years of pancakes, creativity, and connections that helped define a unique chapter in North Park’s dining scene.
