University Heights’ Red House Pizza Closing After 13 Years In Business

Another beloved neighborhood eatery is preparing to say goodbye. Red House Pizza, on Park Boulevard in San Diego’s University Heights, has announced that this weekend will be its final service.

Red House first opened its doors in 2012 under founder Shanan Spearing, who helped establish the restaurant as a cozy and creative fixture in the local dining scene. Known for its inviting red façade and neighborhood vibe, the restaurant quickly became a go-to for locals who loved its inventive pizzas, hearty flatbreads, and casual hangout atmosphere. In 2021, ownership was transferred to Amanda Alix, who has led the restaurant through recent years, maintaining its loyal following while adding her own touches to the menu and operations.

Over the years, Red House Pizza built a reputation for blending classic comfort with bold experimentation, as well as ample plant-based and gluten free options. Its menu ranged from traditional pies to playful creations like the Bangkok pizza, which earned national attention when PETA named it one of the Top 10 Vegan Pizzas in the U.S. in 2024. Red House also garnered praise from San Diego food writers, with its gorgonzola flatbreads, signature crust, and happy hour deals singled out as reasons for its enduring appeal.

The closure marks the end of a 13-year run that made Red House a fixture in University Heights dining and a favorite among those seeking both vegan-friendly and indulgent options. As the restaurant shared in its farewell announcement, this weekend offers one last opportunity for customers to show love to the staff and savor their favorite pizzas before the doors close for good.

Red House Pizza will serve its final pies on Sunday, September 28, at 4615 Park Boulevard in San Diego’s University Heights. For more information, visit redhousepizza.com.
