Woodstock’s Pizza To Close Its Location In San Diego's Pacific Beach After 15 Years

After 15 years of serving pizza, beer, and community spirit to Pacific Beach, Woodstock’s Pizza has announced it will close its Garnet Avenue location on this September.

The company shared the news of its impending closure on Instagram, thanking the PB community for years of support and reminding fans of its long-standing mission to be more than just a pizzeria. Over the years, the Pacific Beach team donated between 1.5 and 2 percent of net sales annually to local schools, nonprofits, and causes, while also employing and training hundreds of students and community members.

Woodstock’s Pizza has deep roots in San Diego. The brand first arrived in the region with its San Diego State University location, which opened in the 1980s and remains a campus institution. Founded originally in 1977 by Chuck Woodstock in Corvallis, Oregon, the chain became known for its folded-crust pizzas loaded with toppings and its reputation as a gathering space for college towns. After the deaths of Chuck Woodstock and early partner Mike Chew in a 1985 plane crash, Jeff Ambrose eventually took over leadership of the California locations, building Woodstock’s into a celebrated independent pizza brand with several outposts across the state.

The PB shop quickly found its place when it opened in 2010, bringing Woodstock’s signature irreverent, student-friendly atmosphere to the beach community. Its late-night slices, casual vibe, and steady rotation of local events made it a go-to spot for both San Diego natives and transplants.

Although the Pacific Beach chapter is closing, the company emphasized that it isn’t going anywhere as a whole. The SDSU location is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and remains under the leadership of longtime team member Lily Castro, who worked her way up from busser to general manager. Leadership has also hinted at exploring new opportunities in San Diego to reinvest in the community.

In announcing the closure, Woodstock’s expressed gratitude to the PB neighborhood for a decade and a half of loyalty. Locals are encouraged to visit before September 21 to share one last pizza, a pint, and a few memories before the ovens shut down for good.

Woodstock’s Pizza is located at 1221 Garnet Avenue in San Diego's Pacific Beach. For more information, visit woodstockspb.com.
