Ceiling Collapse Temporarily Shutters South Bay San Diego Brunch Restaurant

A popular South Bay San Diego brunch restaurant abruptly closed this week after a section of its ceiling reportedly collapsed on diners during lunch service, frightening some patrons and prompting an unplanned shutdown.

According to an eyewitness account shared with SanDiegoVille, the incident occurred on Monday, October 27, when part of the ceiling at Mujer Divina Brunch Café in downtown Chula Vista fell onto guests mid-meal. “My wife and her friends had the ceiling fall on them during lunch,” one witness said. “She’s okay, but her friend got the brunt of it. They comped the meal but didn’t take anyone’s contact info.”

Following the incident, Mujer Divina Brunch Café - the latest concept from Michelin-recognized chef Priscilla Curiel - closed temporarily. The restaurant has since downplayed the episode on social media, referring to it as a “little bump” and announcing plans to reopen on Friday, October 31, with what it described as a “new remodel.”

The café, located on Third Avenue, opened earlier this year next to Curiel’s Mujer Divina Coffee & Burrito House and just steps from her racently unveiled Divina Matcha Café. It quickly gained a following for its creative brunch menu blending Mexican and European influences, including orange carrot pancakes, quesadillas de rajas con crema, and a Mediterranean-inspired lox and toast.

Curiel, who first rose to acclaim with Tuétano Taquería - her birria and bone marrow taco restaurant that earned Michelin Guide recognition in 2020 - has become one of the South Bay’s most high-profile chefs. The collapse at Mujer Divina Brunch Café comes at a time when her Third Avenue restaurant row is expanding, with multiple adjacent concepts under her ownership.

As of this week, it remains unclear whether the City of Chula Vista has been formally notified or if an inspection was conducted before the planned reopening.

Mujer Divina Brunch Café is currently expected to reopen Friday, October 31, at 214 Third Avenue in Chula Vista. For more information, follow @brunchmujerdivina on Instagram
