Corey Willows, a chef at Wild Thyme catering in San Diego, lost his young son Andrew Olsen on Monday morning after a driver struck three siblings walking to school in the Lake Murray area. Andrew’s two sisters were also hospitalized with injuries but are now recovering.
According to San Diego Police, the collision occurred around 7:20am near Jackson Drive and Lake Badin Avenue, as the children were walking to Pershing Middle School, just blocks away. The driver, a man in his 30s, stopped immediately and cooperated with authorities. Police said neither speed nor impairment appeared to be factors, though the investigation remains ongoing.
The tragedy has shaken the San Carlos and Lake Murray neighborhoods, with residents calling for long-overdue pedestrian safety improvements along the busy stretch of Jackson Drive. A makeshift memorial of flowers and candles now stands at the intersection, where friends, family, and neighbors have gathered to mourn and remember.
In the days since the accident, colleagues and friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Support for Corey Willows & Family” to help cover funeral costs, medical expenses, and ongoing family needs as they navigate this devastating loss. The fundraiser, organized by Amber Zubkov of Wild Thyme, has quickly drawn support from both within and beyond the hospitality community. Organizers have also set up a meal train for those who wish to assist the family with food and deliveries.
“Corey is the father of four children, and on their way to school, three of his children were struck by a driver while crossing the street,” the campaign states. “All three were rushed to the hospital, and tragically, Corey’s son Andrew passed away from his injuries. The other two children are currently recovering, and Corey was able to be by Andrew’s side to say goodbye.”
The post describes Willows as a passionate chef whose warmth and work ethic have touched countless coworkers and customers. “His absence has left a noticeable gap in our team,” the campaign reads. “We want to rally around him during this incredibly difficult time.”

Councilmember Raul Campillo, who represents the district, called the incident “heartbreaking” and said his office has been in contact with the City’s Transportation Department about safety concerns in the area. Residents have long urged the city to lower the speed limit and add crosswalk protections along Jackson Drive.
