Created by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, SIX reimagines the six wives of King Henry VIII as modern pop divas, each taking the mic to reclaim her story through original songs inspired by today’s chart-topping artists. The result is a tightly paced, 80-minute spectacle that feels more like a stadium concert than a traditional musical, complete with powerhouse vocals, synchronized choreography, and a live onstage band known as the “Ladies in Waiting.”
The upcoming San Diego engagement features a touring cast led by Emma Elizabeth Smith as Catherine of Aragon, Nella Cole as Anne Boleyn, Kelly Denice Taylor as Jane Seymour, Hailey Alexis Lewis as Anna of Cleves, Alizé Cruz as Katherine Howard, and Tasia Jungbauer as Catherine Parr, with multiple alternates rotating through the production. Casting is subject to change, a standard practice for large-scale touring shows, but the production’s reputation for consistently high-caliber performances has helped maintain its momentum across continents.
Since its unlikely origins as a student-written project at Cambridge University in 2017, SIX has become one of the most successful and recognizable new musicals of the past decade. After debuting at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the show quickly gained traction in the UK, earning five Olivier Award nominations and eventually settling into a long-running West End engagement. Its Broadway journey was briefly derailed in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered theaters on what was meant to be its official opening night, but the show rebounded strongly upon reopening and now plays at New York City’s Lena Horne Theatre.
Critical and commercial acclaim have followed. SIX collected 23 major awards during the 2021–2022 Broadway season, including the Tony Award for Best Original Score, and its cast recording topped Billboard’s cast album charts while surpassing 100 million streams. The production’s touring arm, known as the Boleyn Tour, continues to crisscross North America with dates currently scheduled into summer 2026, underscoring the show’s sustained demand well beyond traditional Broadway audiences.
For San Diego theatergoers, the return of SIX adds another high-profile title to a season that has seen strong attendance for touring Broadway fare. The Civic Theatre, which has hosted everything from long-running classics to buzzy contemporary hits, has increasingly become a key stop for major national tours, reflecting San Diego’s growing stature as a theater market.
Tickets for SIX are now on sale through official outlets, with group sales available for parties of ten or more. Given the show’s popularity, limited run, and holiday timing, performances are expected to sell quickly.
