LA-Based Breakfast Taco Chain HomeState To Exit From San Diego County After Less Than Three Years

Los Angeles-based breakfast taco chain HomeState is preparing to close its only San Diego County restaurant, ending its short-lived expansion into the local market less than three years after opening.

The Oceanside location, situated within the Freeman Collective development in South Oceanside, posted to social media explaining it would begin operating under reduced hours of 11am to 5pm starting Thursday, February 5, leading up to the Sunday, February 22 closure. The company described the decision as a difficult one, noting that while the Oceanside community quickly became “immediately special,” the restaurant ultimately was not able to work in the way the team had hoped.

HomeState opened its Oceanside outpost in June 2023, marking the brand’s first foray into San Diego County after establishing a strong following in the Los Angeles area. Founded in 2013 by Briana “Breezy” Valdez, a former Thomas Keller Bouchon alum, HomeState built its reputation around Austin-style breakfast tacos made with high-quality ingredients, including pasture-raised eggs, humanely raised meats, and house-made flour tortillas.

The Oceanside restaurant occupied a roughly 2,900-square-foot space at 510 Vista Way and launched alongside other food and beverage concepts inside Freeman Collective, including Artifex Brewing, Blackmarket Bakery (closed), Corner Pizza, Northside Shack (never opened due to issues) and Tanner’s Prime Burgers. In addition to its signature breakfast tacos named after Texas rivers, HomeState offered migas, queso, Frito pie, tacos developed in collaboration with musicians, and a full bar program featuring cocktails, beer, wine, and coffee.

At the time of its debut, the Oceanside location was positioned as a potential springboard for additional San Diego-area locations, contingent on its success. Those expansion plans now appear to be off the table, as the closure will leave HomeState with operations solely in the Los Angeles region, where the brand continues to operate multiple locations.

In its farewell message, HomeState thanked Oceanside guests and staff, saying it was grateful for the opportunity to be part of the North County community, even briefly. Customers are invited to stop by before the final day of service to say goodbye and give the space “a proper farewell,” the company said.

HomeState’s Oceanside location will close Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 510 Vista Way. More information about the brand and its remaining locations can be found at myhomestate.com.
