An award-winning Kearny Mesa pizzeria is asking the public for help after a late-night shooting left its storefront damaged in what the owners describe as a random and inexplicable act of violence.
According to ownership, several bullets were fired at Big Oven Pizza at approximately 10:43pm on Sunday, February 15. The restaurant, located at 5025 Shawline Street, was closed at the time, and no employees or customers were inside. No injuries were reported, though the business sustained property damage.
Owner Ralph Kreidly told SanDiegoVille that surveillance footage captured images of the suspect vehicle, and a police report was filed shortly after the incident. Nearly a week later, however, no arrests have been made.
Kreidly said he has also identified additional potential camera footage from across the street at Kaiser Permanente and provided San Diego Police Department with contact information for Kaiser security personnel, who indicated they would cooperate and release footage to investigators upon request. As of publication, ownership says they are unaware of whether that footage has been retrieved.
Big Oven Pizza opened its brick-and-mortar location in May 2024 after building a strong following through its mobile pizza truck. The pizzeria has been recognized among San Diego’s top five pizzerias for three consecutive years and previously earned “Best Food Truck” honors in local competitions. Known for its naturally fermented dough, New York, Detroit and Neapolitan-style pies, and creative specialty combinations, the restaurant has become a popular lunch destination in the Shawline Street corridor.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Ownership has indicated there were no known disputes or prior threats that would explain the attack, and the incident appears to have occurred without warning.
In the wake of the shooting, Kreidly is urging anyone who may recognize the suspect vehicle or have additional information about the incident to come forward.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the San Diego Police Department’s non-emergency line at (619) 531-2000 or submit anonymous tips through San Diego Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or via sdcrimestoppers.org. Anonymous tipsters may be eligible for a reward.
Big Oven Pizza remains open during its regular hours, Monday through Friday from 10:30am to 7pm, as repairs are addressed. For more information, visit bigovenpizza.com.
