The event is anchored by Konishiki, the first non-Japanese-born wrestler to reach the rank of ōzeki, sumo’s second-highest distinction. During his storied career, Konishiki captured three top-division championships and became one of the sport’s most recognizable global ambassadors. Now retired from competition, he serves as host of Sumo + Sushi, guiding audiences through the 1,500-year-old traditions, rituals, and rules of Japan’s national sport before introducing more than a dozen live exhibition matches performed by former professional wrestlers.
Select wrestlers from a lineup that includes Osaka Jo, Ohtani, Yuji, Ruru, Yama, and Meccha will appear at the San Diego shows. Each athlete brings years of professional experience, with several having competed at the Makushita and Sandanme levels, just below sumo’s elite ranks. Following the matches, guests can participate in a live Q&A session with the wrestlers, offering insight into the physical discipline and cultural depth of the sport.
Beyond the ring, the event positions itself as “edu-tainment,” pairing athletic spectacle with a dining component that highlights Japanese cuisine. Ticket tiers range from “The Show” viewing-only seating to premium experiences that include bento boxes, miso soup, and front-row tables surrounding the ring. VIP Sky Suite packages offer expedited entry, an open bar, on-demand hand-rolled sushi prepared by a dedicated chef, and post-show photo opportunities with the wrestlers.
For guests seeking an even more hands-on experience, a limited “Get In The Ring” add-on allows attendees to step onto the dohyo for a supervised match with a wrestler. The add-on is limited to six participants per session and must be purchased alongside a standard event ticket.

The show runs approximately 90 minutes with two brief intermissions. While most performances are 21 and over, the Sunday shows on February 22 and March 1 will be the only all-ages performances. Organizers also offer a volunteer program that allows participants to earn a complimentary ticket after completing a scheduled shift during either weekend.
