San Diego’s growing pastry scene is about to receive a national spotlight as local pastry chef Clément Le Déoré steps onto the Food Network stage once again. The French-born baker and owner of Desserts by Clément in Pacific Beach will compete on the debut season of The Ultimate Baking Championship, which premieres Monday night and pits elite pastry chefs from across the country against one another in what the network describes as its most demanding baking competition to date.
For Déoré, the television appearance marks his second run on the network following a strong showing on Spring Baking Championship, where he advanced to the finale and quickly built a fan base for his technically precise yet visually playful desserts. Known locally for hyper-realistic pastries shaped like fruits and other sculptural forms, Déoré has made a name for himself by blending classic French pastry training with modern presentation techniques that have become increasingly popular in the social media era.
Originally from France’s Brittany region, Déoré began baking at just 15 years old and spent years working across Europe and Australia before eventually settling in San Diego nearly a decade ago. Prior to launching his own brand, he served as executive pastry chef at Le Parfait Paris, helping elevate the bakery’s reputation for refined French desserts before branching out to build his own operation.
After developing a following through wholesale work, pop-ups, and online orders, Déoré opened his standalone bakery, Desserts by Clément, in late 2023 at 1380 Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach. The café-style shop offers croissants, macarons, cakes, sandwiches, and intricately layered entremets, alongside signature pastries molded to resemble items such as mangoes, raspberries, coffee beans, and mushrooms. Since opening, the bakery has drawn steady crowds and quickly established itself as one of San Diego’s most visually distinctive pastry destinations.
Déoré says competition environments push him creatively, forcing chefs to work faster, adapt techniques on the fly, and develop ideas under intense time pressure. That challenge, he notes, is exactly what drew him back to the competitive format after his previous Food Network appearance.
The chef has also hinted that fans who visit his Pacific Beach shop may recognize elements of his on-screen style in the desserts featured on the program. His goal, he says, is to remain authentic to the artistic approach that has defined his bakery while showcasing his personality and creativity to a broader audience.
Beyond television exposure, the growing visibility could also accelerate expansion plans for Desserts by Clément. Déoré has previously shared ambitions to open additional locations around San Diego County and eventually launch a full-service French restaurant concept.
As the new competition series begins airing nationwide, San Diego viewers may find themselves cheering for a familiar face, one whose meticulously crafted pastries have already turned a small Pacific Beach bakery into one of the city’s rising culinary success stories.
Desserts by Clément is located at 1380 Garnet Avenue, Suite E, in San Diego’s Pacific Beach neighborhood. For more information, visit dessertsbyclement.com.
