San Diego’s Gossip Grill Temporarily Closed After Health Inspection Finds Major Vermin Violation

San Diego’s Gossip Grill in Hillcrest was temporarily shut down by the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality following a failed re-inspection that identified a “major” vermin violation.

According to county records, the popular LGBTQ+ venue located at 1220 University Avenue was ordered closed on April 1, 2026, after inspectors cited the significant issue during a follow-up visit. The closure stems from an escalation of concerns first noted during a routine inspection on March 23, when vermin activity was initially documented as a minor violation alongside several other out-of-compliance findings.

During that March inspection, Gossip Grill received a score of 90 (Grade A), but inspectors noted multiple issues, including improper handwashing facilities, food contact surface concerns, unclean nonfood contact surfaces, equipment storage violations, and broader facility maintenance deficiencies involving floors, walls, and ceilings. The presence of vermin at that time was categorized as minor, but the subsequent re-inspection elevated the issue to a major violation, triggering the closure order.
The development marks a significant moment for one of San Diego’s most recognizable LGBTQ+ establishments, which has long served as a cornerstone of the Hillcrest community. Opened in 2009, Gossip Grill has been widely recognized as one of the last remaining lesbian-focused bars in the United States and has built a reputation as a “women-forward” safe space within the city’s nightlife scene.

The closure comes amid a series of challenges and controversies surrounding the venue in recent years. In 2023, Gossip Grill was the target of an arson incident that damaged its outdoor patios, an event that drew widespread community support and highlighted ongoing concerns about safety in LGBTQ+ spaces. More recently, the bar was the subject of viral online discussion following a reported confrontation involving patrons and questions around the role of “safe spaces” in public-facing venues. Despite those incidents, Gossip Grill has remained a high-profile destination in Hillcrest, hosting regular events including karaoke nights and themed programming.

As of now, it is unclear how long the closure will remain in effect. Under county guidelines, establishments ordered closed for major violations must correct the cited issues and pass a follow-up inspection before being allowed to reopen.

SanDiegoVille attempted to contact Gossip Grill by phone on April 2 to confirm current operating status, but the call went unanswered. We also reached out to ownership for comment and will update this story as more information becomes available.
