Moonlight Stage Productions Brings Broadway Smash “Mean Girls” To San Diego's North County As 45th Anniversary Season Continues

One of Broadway’s most successful modern musicals has arrived in North County San Diego as Moonlight Stage Productions continues its milestone 45th anniversary season with a production of Mean Girls, running June 3 through June 20 at the Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista.

Based on the hit 2004 Paramount Pictures film written by Tina Fey, Mean Girls has become a cultural phenomenon in its own right since debuting on Broadway in 2018. The musical adaptation features a book by Fey, music by her husband Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Nell Benjamin, transforming the beloved teen comedy into a high-energy stage production filled with pop-infused songs, sharp humor, and surprisingly heartfelt themes about identity, friendship, and belonging.

The story follows Cady Heron, a teenager who relocates from Africa to suburban Illinois and quickly discovers that high school can be every bit as wild and unpredictable as the savanna she left behind. Navigating the social hierarchy dominated by the infamous Plastics clique and its queen bee Regina George, Cady learns firsthand the consequences of popularity, insecurity, and losing sight of oneself in pursuit of acceptance.
While the source material remains one of the most quoted teen comedies of the modern era, the musical expands upon the original film's themes while introducing a contemporary score and larger emotional arcs that have helped make it a favorite among younger theatergoers. Songs such as Apex Predator, Revenge Party, World Burn, and I'd Rather Be Me have become modern musical theater standards, helping introduce a new generation to live theater through a familiar story.

For Moonlight Stage Productions, Mean Girls represents another example of the organization's ability to balance contemporary Broadway hits with classic musical theater staples. That approach has become a defining characteristic of the Vista-based company, which has spent decades cultivating audiences by presenting everything from Golden Age classics to Tony Award-winning modern productions beneath the stars.

The current season opened with The Cher Show, a crowd-pleasing musical chronicling the life and career of global entertainment icon Cher. Following Mean Girls, audiences can look forward to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from July 8 through July 25, bringing Roald Dahl's whimsical world to the Moonlight stage. The season continues with Guys and Dolls from August 12 through August 29, marking the return of one of Broadway's most celebrated classics to the venue after a 17-year absence. The 45th anniversary season concludes with Come From Away from September 9 through September 26, the acclaimed musical based on the true story of a small Newfoundland town that welcomed thousands of stranded airline passengers following the September 11 attacks.
What continues to distinguish Moonlight from many performing arts venues is the setting itself. Located within Brengle Terrace Park, the Moonlight Amphitheatre offers audiences the opportunity to experience fully staged Broadway-caliber productions accompanied by a live orchestra while enjoying the open-air atmosphere of a Southern California evening. As the sun sets behind Vista's rolling hills and the stage lights illuminate the performance, the venue creates a theatrical experience that feels uniquely San Diego.

Over the past 45 years, Moonlight Stage Productions has grown into one of Southern California's most respected regional theater companies, producing more than 240 musicals while serving as a cultural anchor for North County's performing arts community. The organization also maintains a strong commitment to arts education through Moonlight Youth Theatre, helping develop future performers and theater enthusiasts throughout the region.

As Broadway touring productions continue to draw large audiences downtown at the San Diego Civic Theatre, Moonlight provides a complementary experience that brings professional musical theater to North County audiences in an intimate and distinctly Southern California environment. Whether showcasing a contemporary hit like Mean Girls or reviving a timeless classic such as Guys and Dolls, the company has consistently demonstrated that world-class musical theater can thrive far beyond Broadway itself.

Mean Girls runs through June 20 at the Moonlight Amphitheatre, located at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive in San Diego's North County city of Vista. Tickets and additional information about the remainder of Moonlight Stage Productions' 45th anniversary season are available at moonlightstage.com.
