San Diego's ‘Trump House’ Owner Hospitalized In Critical Condition Following Brutal Attack; Neighbor Arrested For Attempted Murder

A 69-year-old North County San Diego man known locally for transforming his property into a sprawling display of pro-Trump banners, American flags, and political signage is fighting for his life after what police describe as a brutal daytime assault that has now led to an attempted murder arrest.

On Wednesday, May 20, at approximately 2:14pm, officers with the Escondido Police Department responded to the area of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street following reports of a violent assault in progress. When officers arrived, they discovered an elderly male suffering from what authorities described as “significant injuries.” A bystander who reportedly intervened during the incident was also injured.

Police say the suspect fled the scene on foot before officers arrived, but responding units located a man matching the suspect’s description near East Mission Avenue and Begonia Street, roughly half a mile away. Authorities identified the suspect as 32-year-old Escondido resident Thomas Caleb Butler, who was taken into custody without incident and later booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of attempted murder under California Penal Code 664/187(a).

The victim has not yet been formally identified by police, but multiple media outlets identified him as Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old Army veteran believed to own the property long referred to locally as the “Trump House.”

Located near the intersection where the assault occurred, the residence has become widely known throughout Escondido over the past several years for its extensive display of oversized American flags, pro-Donald Trump banners, patriotic signs, and politically charged messaging visible from surrounding streets. The property has frequently circulated on social media and neighborhood forums, where reactions have ranged from admiration and support to criticism and hostility.

Public online commentary indicates the house has been a polarizing fixture within the community for years. Some residents praised the overt patriotism and political displays, while others complained about the scale of the signage and described confrontations involving the property owner. In one video posted earlier this year, Sheron reportedly documented vandalism targeting the displays outside his home.

“Somebody decided that our stuff is not good. Incredible, look at this. They even ripped up the American flag,” Sheron said in the video while showing damaged banners and torn flags.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive in Wednesday’s attack, nor have investigators stated whether the political displays played any direct role in the incident. However, the highly visible nature of the property and years of public controversy surrounding it have intensified speculation online.

Congressman Darrell Issa, whose district includes portions of Escondido, called for “a full and immediate investigation” following reports of the assault.

Video from the aftermath published by multiple media outlets appeared to show evidence markers in the roadway, blood near the driveway area, and investigators documenting the scene around vehicles parked outside the home. One witness reportedly gestured to responding officers indicating the victim may have been kicked or stomped during the attack, though police have not publicly detailed the exact nature of the injuries.

Court records indicate Butler was being held without bail as of Thursday morning. If convicted on the attempted murder charge, he could face life in prison.

The case has quickly drawn national attention amid an already tense political climate and increasing concerns nationwide over politically charged confrontations and violence. At present, however, investigators have not announced whether hate crime enhancements or additional charges are being considered.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Detective Patrick Hand of the Escondido Police Department at (760) 839-4985 or the department directly at (760) 839-4722, referencing case number 26004339.
