According to recently submitted permitting documents, SusieCakes is preparing to open a new bakery at 8855 Villa La Jolla Drive, Suite 490, within The Shops at La Jolla Village shopping center. The location will take over the former home of Sprinkles, the cupcake chain that closed the La Jolla outpost earlier this year after more than a decade in operation.
The project represents the latest chapter in SusieCakes' steady growth throughout Southern California. The company currently operates a single San Diego County location at Carmel Valley's One Paseo lifestyle center, where it has developed a loyal following for its nostalgic desserts, celebration cakes, cookies, pies, and cupcakes made from scratch using traditional recipes.
Founded in 2006 by Susan "Susie" Sarich, SusieCakes has built its brand around classic American baking and old-fashioned desserts prepared without artificial preservatives. The bakery's menu focuses on familiar favorites rather than trendy creations, offering signature items like Vanilla Celebration Cake, Southern Red Velvet Cake, Six-Layer Chocolate Cake, Tropical Coconut Cake, brownies, whoopie pies, cookies, bars, seasonal fruit pies, and custom cakes for birthdays, weddings, and special occasions.
The incoming La Jolla bakery comes as SusieCakes is also actively pursuing another North County expansion at The Forum Carlsbad. Public filings first revealed plans for that location earlier this year, signaling that the company sees significant growth potential in San Diego's coastal communities. Once both projects are completed, SusieCakes would operate three locations throughout San Diego County.
The La Jolla site could prove particularly attractive for the bakery. Located adjacent to Westfield UTC and surrounded by dense residential neighborhoods, office campuses, and one of the county's busiest retail corridors, The Shops at La Jolla Village provides strong visibility and convenient access for customers seeking everything from a quick cupcake to a custom celebration cake.
The move also fills a prominent vacancy left behind by Sprinkles, whose departure created an opening in one of the area's most recognizable dessert destinations. While both companies specialize in cakes and cupcakes, SusieCakes differentiates itself through a broader menu of traditional baked goods and a nostalgic bakery experience centered around scratch-made recipes and classic Americana-inspired desserts.
For longtime San Diegans, the expansion may come as little surprise. SusieCakes first entered the local market in 2019 as part of the highly anticipated opening of One Paseo, where the bakery joined an all-star lineup of dining and retail tenants that helped transform the Del Mar Heights development into one of North County's premier lifestyle centers.
An opening date for the La Jolla bakery has not yet been announced, but permit activity suggests the project is moving through the early stages of development.
