Car Smashes Through Front Of San Diego Restaurant After High-Speed Crash

A speeding car crashed through the front of a San Diego restaurant Tuesday afternoon after reportedly launching over a roundabout, leaving a gaping hole in the building and extensive damage. Miraculously, it appears no one was seriously injured. Video of the dramatic crash has quickly spread across social media.

Video of the dramatic incident, shared by Instagram users @cityheights92105 and @guero_media_, shows a blue Toyota Prius traveling eastbound on University Avenue at what appears to be a high rate of speed. As the vehicle approaches the roundabout at Menlo Avenue, it appears to cut sharply to the right, striking a sign and landscaping before plowing directly into the front entrance area of Trieu Chau Restaurant, a longtime Chinese and Cambodian eatery in San Diego's City Heights neighborhood.
The impact punched a large hole through the front of the restaurant, causing substantial structural damage. Footage taken moments after the collision shows the Prius with extensive front-end damage and at least one flat tire lodged inside the damaged storefront.

A San Diego Police officer can also be seen speaking with the apparent driver, who appeared uninjured following the crash. Fortunately, based on available information, no injuries have been reported among restaurant employees or customers.
According to the San Diego Police Department, officers and San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to the crash at approximately 3:19pm Tuesday at the intersection of Menlo Avenue and University Avenue. Investigators said the Prius was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the curb of the roundabout, became airborne over the median, and crashed into Trieu Chau Restaurant.

Police said alcohol was not believed to be a factor, and no arrests were made. Investigators believe excessive speed was likely a contributing factor in the collision, though the incident remains under investigation.

The extent of the damage to the restaurant has not yet been disclosed, and it is unclear when the business will be able to reopen for business in the coming days.
