The opening marks the culmination of a transition that quietly began late last year, when SanDiegoVille first reported that the 15-year-old URBN Pizza would be closing to make way for the new concept. At the time, the December 23 report came before URBN ownership publicly acknowledged the restaurant's impending closure, effectively alerting many longtime customers - and, according to numerous messages received by SanDiegoVille, even many employees - that the beloved neighborhood pizzeria's days were numbered.
URBN Restaurant Group did not publicly confirm the closure until nearly three weeks later, when founder Jon Mangini announced that the North Park location would permanently close on February 15 after 15 years in business. In his emotional message to customers, Mangini thanked both the community and generations of employees who had helped establish URBN as one of North Park's defining neighborhood restaurants. For many longtime patrons, the announcement marked the end of an era.
When URBN first opened in 2010, North Park was only beginning its transformation into one of San Diego's premier dining and nightlife destinations. Inspired by New Haven's legendary BAR Pizza, the restaurant introduced authentic New Haven-style coal-fired pizza to San Diego and became a cornerstone of the neighborhood's rapidly growing restaurant scene. Its spacious dining room, lively bar and late-night atmosphere helped define University Avenue during a period of explosive growth for the community. Now, the space enters an entirely different chapter.
Founded by Kalani Millsaps and Patricia Sebold, One Of Us was born from a simple but increasingly common frustration: trying to watch women's sporting events in traditional sports bars where games were often relegated to smaller televisions, changed upon request or not shown at all. Rather than asking existing sports bars to change, the founders decided to create one specifically designed around women's athletics.
The concept has spent the past year building a loyal following through pop-up watch parties held throughout San Diego, bringing together fans of the WNBA, NWSL, women's volleyball, rugby, softball, collegiate athletics and other leagues that have historically received far less visibility in conventional sports bar settings.
The permanent North Park location expands that vision into a full-service restaurant and bar centered around women's sports while remaining welcoming to all fans. Alongside dozens of televisions broadcasting women's sporting events, guests can expect coal-fired pizza, craft cocktails and a family-friendly atmosphere designed to encourage community as much as competition.

The decision to retain coal-fired pizza also serves as a subtle nod to the building's culinary history. Rather than completely abandoning the site's identity, One Of Us will preserve one of the property's defining features while introducing an entirely new hospitality concept.
Grand opening festivities begin at 1pm on Thursday, July 16, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted alongside North Park Main Street and community leaders. Doors will open to the public at 1:30 p.m., followed by a full afternoon and evening of televised women's sporting events, including Athletes Unlimited Softball League, WNBAmatchups and professional softball broadcasts.
The celebration will also feature appearances by athletes from several San Diego organizations, including representatives from San Diego Wave FC and the USA Rugby Eagles, along with giveaways. The first 15 customers through the doors will receive complimentary One Of Us merchandise and swag bags.
The opening also reflects a broader shift occurring throughout San Diego's sports landscape. Over the past several years, women's professional sports have experienced unprecedented growth, fueled by record-breaking attendance, soaring television ratings and expanding professional leagues. San Diego has emerged as one of the movement's strongest markets through the success of San Diego Wave FC, the arrival of professional volleyball, international rugby competitions and an increasingly passionate local fan base.
Yet until now, the city lacked a venue specifically dedicated to celebrating those athletes every day. One Of Us aims to change that.
Beginning July 16, the former URBN Pizza space at 3085 University Avenue will become home to San Diego's first women's sports bar - a concept that represents not only a new restaurant for North Park, but also a reflection of how dramatically the city's sports culture has evolved over the past decade.
For One Of Us, it's the beginning of a new chapter. For the building itself, it's another reinvention in one of San Diego's most dynamic neighborhoods.
