SanDiegoVille reached out to iFLY San Diego through Instagram seeking confirmation and additional information but had not received a response as of publication. Located at 2385 Camino Del Rio North, iFLY San Diego opened in 2016 as one of the signature attractions within Sudberry Properties' Discovery Place development. The approximately $10 million venue features a 48-foot-tall vertical wind tunnel that allows guests to experience the sensation of freefall skydiving without ever stepping foot on an airplane.
The three-story facility quickly became a popular destination for birthday parties, corporate outings, school groups, tourists, and experienced skydivers looking to refine their skills. The attraction welcomed flyers ranging from young children to seniors, offering a controlled environment where participants could safely float on a powerful column of air under the guidance of certified instructors.
When the project was announced in 2014, iFLY executives described indoor skydiving as an experience that fulfilled a nearly universal dream. "Almost everybody at some point in their lives has dreamt about flying," then-CEO Alan Metni said during the project's groundbreaking.
The Mission Valley location ultimately became San Diego County's only surviving indoor skydiving attraction. A competing facility that briefly operated in downtown San Diego closed several years ago before the City purchased the property in 2018. The former East Village skydiving center was converted into the City's Homelessness Response Center and, earlier this year, officials approved plans to redevelop the site into a 164-unit affordable housing project led by Father Joe's Villages.
If the Mission Valley location closes as expected, San Diego County will once again be without an indoor skydiving facility, leaving Southern California enthusiasts to travel outside the region to experience the sport.
It remains unclear what prompted the closure, how many employees will be affected, or what plans, if any, exist for the purpose-built wind tunnel building. Likewise, the future of the property has not been announced.
