The Voltaire Street pub shared the heartbreaking news Tuesday in an emotional message to customers, confirming that after six years in business it is time to close its doors.
“After six unforgettable years, we are closing the doors of Long Story Irish Pub,” the owners wrote. “These walls have witnessed first dates, engagements, birthdays, reunions, celebrations, heartbreaks, victories, and countless ordinary nights that somehow became unforgettable.”
The farewell message thanks customers, employees, family members, and friends for transforming the business into far more than just a neighborhood bar.
“To every customer who chose to spend your time with us—you gave us so much more than your business. You gave us your friendship, your stories, and a place in your lives,” the post reads. “You gave us more than a pub. You gave us a family.”
The announcement comes less than a year after owner Kyle Schubert made a public plea for help as the business struggled under mounting financial pressures. In December 2025, Schubert released an emotional video explaining that rising operating costs, slower customer traffic, and the challenge of supporting a 20-person staff had pushed the beloved pub to the brink. At the time, the business also launched a GoFundMe campaign while urging the community that what it needed most wasn’t donations, but customers walking through the doors.
Despite an outpouring of support from regulars and the wider San Diego community, it ultimately wasn’t enough to secure the pub’s future.
Long Story Irish Pub first opened in 2021 in the former Royale space at 4204 Voltaire Street. Founded by Kyle Schubert along with partners Nathaniel Winnett, Jerod Meents, and Joseph DeNigris, the neighborhood pub quickly earned a loyal following with its Irish-inspired comfort food, extensive whiskey selection, sports-friendly atmosphere, and reputation as a place where families, friends, and neighbors gathered for everything from Little League celebrations to memorial gatherings.
In a final invitation to the community, the owners are asking supporters to stop by one last time before the lights go out.
“Please come say goodbye and have a drink or 10,” the pub wrote. “We are doing half off everything in the bar Wednesday through Sunday. We need to clean house.”
The farewell continues with one final request: “Come in, walk behind the bar and give us a hug. It’s been a great run… curtains go down Sunday at midnight.”
Schubert closed the announcement by reflecting on the journey that brought him to Point Loma.
“Moving to this amazing town, opening this pub and making lifelong friends has been one of the true pleasures of my life.”
Long Story Irish Pub will serve its final customers through Sunday before officially closing its doors at midnight.
