Nearly two years after a dramatic fire forced its closure during San Diego Comic-Con, Rei Do Gado Brazilian Steakhouse has officially announced its return. The longtime Gaslamp Quarter restaurant will reopen on Monday, July 20, 2026, just days before tens of thousands of Comic-Con attendees once again descend on downtown San Diego.
The reopening marks the end of an unexpectedly long restoration for one of downtown's longest-running restaurants. In announcing the return, ownership described the project as "a whole new era" for Rei Do Gado, unveiling photos of a fully renovated interior featuring an expanded bar, updated dining room, new lighting, contemporary finishes, and refreshed décor while preserving the restaurant's classic Brazilian steakhouse identity.
The restaurant first announced plans earlier this year to return sometime during summer 2026, but this week confirmed the exact reopening date.
"The wait is OVER!" the restaurant wrote on social media. "You're invited to Rei do Gado's grand reopening on Monday, July 20. We thank our loyal guests for their patience and can't wait to welcome you to our next chapter."
The timing is particularly fitting. It was during Comic-Con weekend on July 26, 2024, that disaster struck. At approximately 7:27pm that evening, a fire broke out inside the kitchen of Rei Do Gado at 939 Fourth Avenue. Flames quickly spread through the four-story historic building, sending thick black smoke over the Gaslamp Quarter as thousands of Comic-Con visitors filled downtown streets.
San Diego Fire-Rescue crews mounted a large response, ultimately containing the blaze in about an hour. While no firefighters or civilians were injured, the fire caused extensive damage to the building's roof and mechanical systems and displaced approximately 50 residents and short-term guests staying in apartments and vacation rentals above the restaurant.
The incident also disrupted Comic-Con festivities. Nearby buildings were evacuated, including Bloom Nightclub, where approximately 1,200 guests attending HBO's The Penguin activation were temporarily forced outside while firefighters battled the blaze. Although ownership initially hoped the closure would be temporary, the scope of repairs required to restore the historic building ultimately stretched into a nearly two-year reconstruction project.
Founded in 1999, Rei Do Gado introduced generations of San Diegans to the traditional Brazilian churrascaria experience, where gaucho-style servers continuously carve skewered meats tableside while guests enjoy an expansive salad bar and hot buffet. For many years, it stood as San Diego's only Brazilian steakhouse and became a favorite destination for convention visitors, business dinners, birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebrations.
Its return also restores another legacy restaurant to the Gaslamp Quarter at a time when downtown continues experiencing rapid turnover among restaurants and nightlife concepts. While many longtime establishments have disappeared over the past decade, Rei Do Gado has remained one of downtown's enduring dining institutions despite the lengthy interruption caused by the fire.
The newly released images suggest the rebuilt restaurant blends modern design with warm, traditional elements. Rich wood flooring, leather banquettes, dramatic globe lighting, brass accents, an upgraded bar, and custom wall murals give the nearly 27-year-old restaurant a noticeably more contemporary feel while maintaining the upscale atmosphere longtime customers remember.
The reopening also arrives at one of the busiest times of the year for downtown businesses. With Comic-Con beginning just days later, Rei Do Gado will once again welcome thousands of visitors to the same neighborhood where the fire dramatically interrupted convention festivities two summers ago.
