Family Seeks Answers After Texas Veteran Mysteriously Flew To San Diego, Vanished For Two Days & Died In Train Incident

A grieving family is turning to the San Diego community for help reconstructing the final two days of a 40-year-old military veteran's life after he unexpectedly boarded a flight from Texas to San Diego, seemingly disappeared after leaving the airport, and was struck and killed by a train near Torrey Pines and Del Mar. San Diego County officials have now confirmed the man's identity, the location and timing of the fatal incident, and that his identity was established through fingerprint comparison.

The unusual circumstances came to public attention Monday after the man's sister posted an emotional plea to Reddit's r/sandiego community. According to the family, her brother, Christian Daniel Vasquez, unexpectedly flew from San Antonio to San Diego on the morning of Wednesday, September 9, despite relatives being unaware of any plans or apparent reason for him to visit Southern California.

Vasquez was 40 and had served in both the U.S. Army and National Guard, his sister explained in the discussion. She said he left most of his possessions behind in Texas and apparently traveled with very few belongings, making the sudden trip even more puzzling to his family.

His last known shared phone location was at San Diego International Airport shortly after his arrival on September 9. From there, his family has been unable to account for much of his whereabouts during the approximately two days preceding his death.

"We don't know where Christian went, where he stayed, who he spoke to, or how he traveled through San Diego," his sister wrote.

San Diego County has now confirmed significant details surrounding what happened at the end of that two-day period. In response to an inquiry from SanDiegoVille, county Public Safety Communications Officer Chuck Westerheide said the Medical Examiner's Office investigated Vasquez's death and confirmed his identity through fingerprint comparison.

According to the Medical Examiner's Office, emergency personnel responded shortly after midnight on September 11 to a report of a pedestrian struck by a train on the railroad right-of-way near North Torrey Pines Road and Carmel Valley Road in Del Mar. Vasquez was injured at approximately 12:10 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene at 12:19 a.m.

The Medical Examiner identified Vasquez's cause of death as blunt force injuries. His manner of death remains listed as "Pending Investigation," meaning officials have not yet publicly classified the death as accidental, suicide, homicide or otherwise. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office is identified as the investigating law enforcement agency, and Vasquez's next of kin has been notified.

The county records list Vasquez as a resident of Granite Bay, California, and give his date of birth as June 5, 1986. Although his family said he had traveled to San Diego from Texas, the Medical Examiner's record identifies his official city and state of residence as Granite Bay.

The county's confirmation also substantiates an unusual detail previously provided by Vasquez's family. His sister had said he apparently did not have identification with him when he was found and that authorities ultimately identified him using fingerprints; Westerheide specifically confirmed to SanDiegoVille that identification was established through fingerprint comparison.

His phone, backpack, identification and other possessions remain unaccounted for, according to his family. Those missing belongings have become another potentially important piece of the mystery as relatives attempt to determine where Vasquez went after arriving in San Diego and what occurred during his final two days.

The newly confirmed information answers questions about where and when Vasquez died, but it does little to explain why he abruptly traveled to San Diego or what he did during the roughly 48 hours between arriving at San Diego International Airport and being struck by the train. Those are the questions his family is now asking the public to help answer.

His sister had previously expressed frustration over the apparent lack of publicly available information surrounding the fatal incident. Before receiving confirmation from the county, SanDiegoVille was unable to locate a publicly issued law enforcement news release or contemporaneous local news report documenting a fatal September 11 train collision in the Torrey Pines or Del Mar area.

The absence of public reporting had particularly puzzled Vasquez's family because fatal collisions involving trains elsewhere in San Diego County are frequently reported publicly. Several Reddit users similarly attempted to locate coverage of the September 11 incident and came up empty, although the absence of a news report does not itself indicate anything unusual about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Medical Examiner's response now independently confirms that the incident did occur and that emergency personnel responded to a pedestrian struck by a train at the railroad right-of-way near North Torrey Pines Road and Carmel Valley Road. What remains unclear is which train was involved and which railroad or transit agency was operating it.

The circumstances leading Vasquez to San Diego remain even less clear. His family does not know whether he traveled north from the airport by train, rideshare, bus, on foot or through some combination of transportation, nor has the family publicly identified anyone he may have been meeting in the region.

His military background prompted several San Diegans to wonder whether he could have been visiting someone associated with the region's enormous active-duty and veteran community. Others suggested the family investigate whether Vasquez visited a VA facility or had contacts stationed locally, but there is currently no evidence establishing that either occurred.

Likewise, some Reddit commenters speculated about Vasquez's mental health, substance use, romantic relationships or reasons for traveling to San Diego. None of those theories has been substantiated by his family or authorities, and the Medical Examiner's determination that the manner of death remains pending investigation provides no factual basis for drawing conclusions about why Vasquez was on the railroad tracks.

Instead, his sister's request is straightforward: she wants to find people who may have actually encountered her brother.

The family is particularly interested in hearing from anyone who worked at or passed through San Diego International Airport on September 9, rode local COASTER, Amtrak, trolley or bus services between September 9 and 11, or was around Torrey Pines, Del Mar, Sorrento Valley and nearby communities during that period. They are also hoping someone might remember seeing Vasquez's backpack, phone, identification or other belongings.

The Reddit appeal quickly resonated with San Diegans, receiving more than 1,600 upvotes within hours. Residents began suggesting potential avenues for reconstructing Vasquez's movements, including airport surveillance footage, rideshare records, financial transactions, cellular location information and footage that may exist aboard the train involved in the fatal incident.

One commenter who said her own husband was struck and killed by a train in San Diego told Vasquez's sister that train cameras helped her family understand what happened. She suggested asking investigators about any available onboard footage as well as eventually reviewing information contained in the Medical Examiner's report.

Vasquez's sister emphasized that the family does not want members of the public trespassing, attempting to access private information, harassing people or interfering with the official investigation. Rather, they are hoping someone already possesses a seemingly insignificant piece of information that could help fill the two-day hole in their brother's final journey.

For his family, the unanswered questions now extend beyond the mechanics of Vasquez's death. They want to know why he suddenly came to San Diego, where he went after leaving the airport, how he traveled roughly 20 miles north toward Del Mar, who he encountered along the way and what became of the belongings he apparently had when he arrived.

"Christian wasn't just an unidentified person involved in a train incident," his sister wrote. "He was my brother. He was someone's son, brother, uncle, friend and a veteran."

Anyone who believes they encountered Christian Daniel Vasquez between September 9 and September 11 or possesses legitimate information concerning his movements is being asked to contact his sister privately through the original Reddit post rather than publishing potentially sensitive information publicly.

SanDiegoVille has also contacted Amtrak seeking additional information about the fatal incident, including whether an Amtrak train was involved. The Medical Examiner's investigation is case No. 2026-02469, and the manner of Vasquez's death remains pending investigation.
