Pacific Beach's Zen 5 Sushi To Close After 22 Years, Just One Year After Reopening Following Devastating Fire

Just one year after making an emotional comeback from a devastating fire that kept its doors closed for nearly 18 months, Pacific Beach's beloved Zen 5 Sushi has announced it will permanently close by the end of 2026. The longtime Garnet Avenue restaurant, known for its reggae-inspired atmosphere, loyal neighborhood following and inventive sushi rolls, says its lease will not be renewed because the property is being sold.

The announcement marks a heartbreaking turn for a business that spent more than a year rebuilding after a May 2024 kitchen fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage. Zen 5 finally celebrated its soft reopening on October 10, 2025, only to learn that its time at 1130 Garnet Avenue would be coming to an end.

"Unfortunately, our lease was not renewed and we are heartbroken to share we will be closing our doors by the end of the year," the restaurant announced on Instagram. Zen 5 also confirmed that it will reduce operations to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout November as the team prepares to say goodbye.

The restaurant's operators explained in subsequent comments that the property is being sold and that relocating is not a realistic option. According to the business, Mr. Kim and his partner are now elderly and cannot undertake the considerable effort of opening another restaurant, despite their desire to continue serving the community.

For longtime Pacific Beach residents, the announcement represents another loss of a neighborhood institution along Garnet Avenue, where the area's commercial landscape has changed considerably over the past two decades. Zen 5's combination of Japanese cuisine, reggae music, casual hospitality and familiar faces made it a gathering place for generations of locals.

The restaurant's history dates to the early 2000s, although its own accounts have referenced both 2004 and earlier beginnings. Over the years, Zen 5 developed a devoted following for its specialty sushi rolls, nigiri, Japanese appetizers, sake and relaxed atmosphere, becoming a favorite for date nights, celebrations and casual dinners.

Its survival following the 2024 fire made the impending closure especially painful. After extensive repairs, rebuilding and permitting delays, the restaurant finally reopened in October 2025, restoring a familiar presence to Pacific Beach after nearly a year and a half of uncertainty.

Now, barely a year after that comeback, the team is preparing to close for reasons unrelated to the fire.

The response to the announcement has been overwhelmingly emotional, with dozens of customers sharing memories of birthdays, friendships, date nights and years spent gathering around the sushi bar. One longtime patron described Zen 5 as among the last remaining establishments representing the older character of Pacific Beach, while others expressed disbelief that the restaurant would close so soon after its costly restoration.

Several customers urged the operators to relocate or asked whether the community could intervene with the landlord. The restaurant's responses made clear that the decision was tied to the property's sale and the inability to secure another lease, rather than a lack of customer support.

In one particularly touching exchange, Zen 5 reflected on the relationships built over the years, explaining that its customers had helped support the restaurant's families through college, marriages, children and grandchildren. The business thanked its longtime employees and patrons for remaining loyal through the pandemic, the fire and the extended rebuilding process.

"We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to reopen, even if it was for a short time," the restaurant wrote in its farewell announcement.

Zen 5's departure will leave another vacancy in the collective memory of Pacific Beach, a neighborhood whose identity has long been shaped by independent restaurants, bars and businesses that become fixtures in residents' lives. For customers who waited patiently through the fire-related closure, the chance to return to their favorite sushi bar has proved unexpectedly brief.

Zen 5 Sushi remains at 1130 Garnet Avenue in San Diego's Pacific Beach neighborhood. The restaurant plans to operate Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during November, with its final closing date expected before the end of 2026 but not yet specified.

For those who have spent the past two decades making memories over sushi and reggae music, the remaining weeks offer one final opportunity to visit, thank the staff and say goodbye to a Pacific Beach original.
