The shooting happened shortly after 2am Monday, October 5, at Crystal Pier near the western end of Garnet Avenue. San Diego Police said the victim was a 31 year old man working as an unarmed security guard at the pier when he was shot. His identity had not been publicly released as of the latest police update pending notification of his family.
Employees from a nearby bar reportedly heard the gunfire and rushed outside, where they discovered the critically wounded guard and began rendering aid. Police officers and San Diego Fire Rescue personnel responded, and the victim was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The chaotic moments immediately after the gunfire may ultimately prove important to investigators. Witnesses told police that some people attempted to chase the shooter after the attack, although investigators had not determined publicly whether the person ultimately escaped on foot or entered a vehicle.
Despite those witnesses, police had not released even a basic description of the person being sought as of Monday afternoon. No age, gender, clothing description or vehicle information had been made public, and police had not announced a possible motive or explained what interaction, if any, occurred between the security guard and his killer before shots were fired.
Homicide detectives were interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from businesses surrounding the pier as they attempted to reconstruct what happened. The shooting occurred in one of Pacific Beach's busiest commercial and nightlife areas, where restaurants, bars, hotels and other businesses cluster around the intersection of Garnet Avenue and Mission Boulevard just steps from the beach and boardwalk.
There is a discrepancy in early reporting over the block number where the shooting occurred. NBC 7 reported the 5400 block of Ocean Boulevard, while another report citing SDPD placed the shooting in the 4500 block. Crystal Pier itself is located at 4500 Ocean Boulevard, at the western terminus of Garnet Avenue, and multiple historical and official sources identify that as the pier's address.
Police have stressed that investigators do not currently believe there is an ongoing threat to the public, although authorities have not publicly explained what led them to that conclusion. The statement could suggest detectives believe the shooting arose from a specific encounter rather than a random attack, but police have not said that, and the circumstances surrounding the killing remain unknown.
The fact that the victim was working security at the time adds another unanswered question to the investigation. It remains unclear whether the shooting was connected to his security duties, whether he had confronted or interacted with the shooter, or whether his employment was incidental to what happened. Police have confirmed only that he was an unarmed security guard working at Crystal Pier when he was shot.
Crystal Pier has employed security for years in part because of the unusual mixture of public and private space at the property. The historic pier serves as a public coastal attraction during the day while also containing the privately operated Crystal Pier Hotel & Cottages, whose guests sleep in cottages constructed directly above the Pacific Ocean. Reporting about the property has noted that gates close to non hotel guests in the evening, while records dating back more than a decade specifically reference hotel security personnel enforcing the property's private areas.
The location has been part of Pacific Beach for nearly a century. Crystal Pier was completed in 1927 and was originally envisioned as a much more elaborate seaside attraction called Pickering's Pleasure Pier, complete with amusement features and a ballroom. The cottages began welcoming overnight guests around 1930, and the property has remained under family ownership since 1961.
Today, the roughly 870 foot wooden pier and its distinctive blue and white cottages are among the neighborhood's most recognizable landmarks. The pier has endured major storms, structural damage and repeated repairs over its long history, including significant storm damage that forced most of the public portion to close before it fully reopened in July 2025.
Monday's killing now brings a homicide investigation directly to the entrance of that landmark and to an area that can remain active well into the early morning hours. The approximately 2am timing also coincides with California's closing time for alcohol service, although authorities have disclosed no evidence linking the shooting to any particular bar, patron or nightlife related dispute.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting, recorded video in the Crystal Pier area around 2am Monday or has information that could assist investigators is asked to contact the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293.
