San Diego's biggest holiday celebration is returning to Balboa Park this December with a familiar face from American Idol taking center stage. Platinum-selling singer Clay Aiken will headline the 49th annual December Nights festival, bringing his holiday music to one of California's largest free seasonal celebrations.
The two-day festival takes place Friday, December 4, and Saturday, December 5, transforming Balboa Park into a sprawling holiday celebration featuring thousands of lights, international food, cultural performances, free museum admission during designated evening hours and entertainment spread across five stages. City officials expect approximately 350,000 visitors over the weekend.
Aiken, who became a household name after finishing second on the second season of American Idol in 2003, will perform at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion on Saturday, December 5, at 7:25pm. His performance will feature Christmas classics alongside selections from his latest album, Rewind, according to the City of San Diego. The concert is being presented in partnership with Local Media San Diego, the company behind radio stations 91X, Z90 and Magic 92.5.
The singer rose to fame during the early years of the reality television phenomenon, developing a devoted following and launching a recording career that included the multiplatinum debut album Measure of a Man and the holiday album Merry Christmas with Love. His appearance adds a nationally recognized performer to a festival traditionally centered on San Diego's cultural organizations, local musicians and community groups.
This year's December Nights will feature more than 1,600 performers representing approximately 70 groups, along with more than 200 food and retail booths. The celebration will stretch across Balboa Park's historic plazas, gardens and cultural institutions, with the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages once again offering visitors a chance to sample traditional foods and experience holiday customs from around the world.
Friday's festivities begin at 4pm, with the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony scheduled for 6pm at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. The ceremony will be led by City Council President Joe LaCava, alongside representatives from KUSI, FOX 5 San Diego and city leadership.
Families can expect an assortment of free attractions, including Ferris wheel rides, a holiday light show projected onto the San Diego Museum of Art facade, hands-on holiday art projects sponsored by Home Depot and activities provided by Disneyland. Santa Claus will also make appearances for photographs, while Food Truck Alley at Village Place will offer additional dining options.
The festival will also feature skateboarding demonstrations at Palisades Plaza presented by Bones Love Milk, hundreds of local artists and performers, games and activities throughout the park. Many Balboa Park museums will open their doors for free during evening hours, providing an opportunity to explore some of San Diego's major cultural institutions without paying admission.
December Nights traces its roots to the late 1970s, when the event began as a smaller holiday gathering associated with Balboa Park's cultural institutions. Over the decades, it expanded into a massive citywide celebration, drawing visitors from across Southern California and beyond.
The festival is free to attend, although food, beverages, merchandise and certain attractions may carry additional charges. Friday's hours are 4pm to 10pm, while Saturday's festivities run from noon to 10pm.
With hundreds of thousands of attendees expected, transportation and parking will be among the biggest logistical challenges. The city is encouraging visitors to avoid driving directly into Balboa Park and instead use free shuttle services operating from three locations: City College at 16th Avenue and B Street, downtown at Third Avenue and A Street, and Little Italy at Beech Street and Kettner Boulevard.
All three shuttle routes will drop off and pick up passengers at Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street near the park's western entrance. Free parking will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis in City College parking garages, while paid parking options will be offered in and around Balboa Park.
Visitors arriving by bicycle can use two free bike valets sponsored by SANDAG, located near the Laurel Street bridge and on Village Place near the San Diego Natural History Museum. The Metropolitan Transit System will also provide bus service between the City College transit hub and the festival.
The city is also partnering with San Diego Gas & Electric and Jewish Family Service on a holiday donation drive collecting socks and underwear for individuals staying at San Diego's Safe Parking sites. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations and participate in the charitable effort.
For safety reasons, drones are prohibited, and visitors are encouraged to leave pets at home unless they are trained service animals. With large crowds anticipated, police are reminding attendees to keep personal belongings secure and children within sight.
December Nights 2026 takes place Friday, December 4, from 4-10pm, and Saturday, December 5, from noon–10pm, at Balboa Park in San Diego. Admission is free, and Clay Aiken's headline performance is scheduled for Saturday at 7:25pm at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.
