7 Spots to Get Your NFL Game Day Grub in San Diego

Let's Go CHARGERS!
September 4, 2014

Can you believe that football starts TODAY?! “If You Can’t Be an Athlete, Be an Athletic Supporter.” Remember that famous quote from the ultra-popular movie Grease? Pick up your pom poms San Diego. We’ve got a roundup of this fall’s best local football-watching, beer drinkin’ hot spots that would even have strict old Principal McGee ready to party.

Tablegating spots like True North Tavern in North Park are ready for San Diego’s football fans. TNT kicks off the party with a season-long NFL Regular Program where fans are rewarded just for showing up. Prizes include iPads, bikes and even a new 50 inch widescreen TV! Can’t get the game at home? Head to TNT, where they’ve secured a satellite package to guarantee your team is on one of their 25 widescreen TVs or on one of their two new 80 inch TVs.

Game day grub: The Loaded Tots covered in warm cheese sauce, cilantro, chipotle cream, salsa fresca, and your choice of carne asada, chicken and bacon, shredded barbeque pork, or chili, or one pound of their Crispy Natural Chicken Wings flavored in buffalo, Sriracha garlic, spicy barbeque, or sweet chili sauce and wash it down with a Stone brew on tap.

While watching football at home in your man cave is hard to beat, we bet you’d still have to get up for a beer. Not at Tavern in Pacific Beach. Tableside taps hook up to a pony keg with the right from your table for easy access so there is no delay of game. Ask about Tavern’s Football Program for a chance at weekly prizes (must sign up by September 3). Specials include $ 4 frozen cocktails and $6 mixed ideologies on Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturday, enjoy $4 Coors Light and $5 Blue Moon and on Sundays, Bud Light is $4 and Shock Top is $5.

Game day grub: Pigs in a blanket are so yesterday. Try Tavern’s Kegs in a Blanket, pretzel wrapped cheddar-beer brats that come with house-crafted mustards, green papaya and jimaca slaw are a good bet. Ready for Monday Night Football? Monday is Bunday at Tavern, featuring build-your-own-burgers for only $12.   Wash it down with a One Night Stand. We’re talking about Tavern’s cocktail of Grey Goose Citron, a seasonal berry puree, fresh lemon and Domaine Ste Michelle Brut.

You know what else won’t happen in your living room arena? Freebies! Check out the NFL Rewards Program at barleymash. Prizes for this season’s regulars include $500 gift cards to the Apple store, pitchers of beer, tickets to Week 14’s Chargers versus NY Giants game and more.

Game day grub: Try the (Grid) Iron Fries, a hearty portion of home-made fries is smothered in all kinds of goodness and baked off in brick ovens. We like the version called the All In, topped with pork belly confit, stout braised short rib, pulled pork, pepper jack beer-cheese sauce and fresh chopped chili mix. Served on top of fries. If you spill it on the sofa, no one gets in trouble at barleymash and we can’t say the same for arm chair quarterbacks at home this season.

The best thing about football? It’s on TV three days straight. Get your Monday night football fix at Pacific Beach Ale House with $5 burger deals. Monday’s best bet might be the Beer Cheese Burger with 10 ounces of Angus beef and house-made beer cheese, caramelized onions and bacon served on a pretzel bun. Other select burgers are available for $5 from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. along with $3 pilsners from 5 p.m. until close.

Game day grub: We just can’t pick out one burger to boast about. Wash down you pick with their handcrafter beers like our favorite, the PB AleHouse Amber Wave.

Uptown Tavern added four more 51’ flat screen TV’s, for  a total of 14 throughout Hillcrest’s favorite party spot. On “Alumni Saturdays,” grab a seat in front of one of the TVs and root for your hometown college team. Check out your favorite NFL teams on Monday, Thursday, and of course, on Sunday Fundays. Visit for reverse happy hour on Thursdays from 9 pm until 1 am and  on Sundays for halftime prize giveaways.

Game day grub: We’re digging the bacon-wrapped turkey meatloaf. Just like mom used to make. Only it’s better! Or try the black bean burger sliders with roasted piquillo pepper puree, escabeche slaw and topped with smoked gouda.

Sandbar Sports Bar and Grill kicks off the party with a season-long Instagram contest where fans can upload photos with the #sandbarfootball for a chance to win $25 gift cards each week. Bonus? Sign up for Sandbar’s NFL Regular Card for a free coozie, coupon for $2 off retail items in September and chances at weekly prizes. Rewarding regulars for accumulating attendance, the Sandbar team will raffle off prizes like gift cards for $150, $250, and $500. In order to be eligible to win, fans must be present. Saturday specials include $4 bottles of Coors Light and $5 22 ounce drafts. Sunday specials feature $12 Big Ass Bloodys with Skyy vodka and $12 bottles of champagne along with additional specials on beer.

Game day grub: Did you know Sandbar loves their Boise State University alums and fans? Ask for Matt at Sandbar for more details and specials like Sandbar gift cards and the chance to win “Tots for a Year.”

Come by West Coast Tavern on the first NFL Sunday, September 7 for your chance to win a $25 tab for each Sunday of the season from here on out. Other prizes include Chargers tickets, gift cards and Beats Headphones. Each Sunday, join your favorite North Park bar and restaurant for $3 Bud Light drafts, $5 Stella drafts and choose from a stable full of mules because pitchers are only $20 each. On Mondays, visit for specials on wine flights and Chef Abe’s homemade pasta.  On Saturdays and Sundays, enjoy brunch with the bloody mary bar starting at 10am along with $15 Mimosa pitchers and $20 Mule pitchers.

Game day grub: We suggest starting out with a bowl of bacon chipotle fondue served with flatbread. Game for a meal that satisfies? Try the pork belly and waffles with bacon-infused maple syrup, garlic butter and well, more bacon.
