Breakfast Republic Continues Rapid San Diego Expansion | Three New Locations Planned Plus A Pizza Centric Eatery

October 9, 2016

Johan Engman got into the breakfast game with his first Fig Tree Cafe in Pacific Beach, which opened in 2008. His Rise & Shine Restaurant Group now has three Fig Tree locations (PB, Hillcrest & Liberty Station), operates the recently launched Como Ceviche in the East Village, and packs the house at two locations of his Breakfast Republic eateries (North Park & Liberty Station). We have learned that Engman has plans to open at least three more Breakfast Republic outposts - one in the space that formerly housed Firefly Grill & Wine Bar in Encinitas, another at the former Zanzibar Cafe in downtown San Diego, and one more at an undisclosed location in Carmel Valley.

A native of Sweden, Johan Engman moved to San Diego when he was 16 and worked at various positions within the restaurant industry. He fell in love with working in restaurants and knew he eventually wanted to open his own breakfast-centric eatery. In 2008, his dream came alive when he opened the first Fig Tree Cafe in Pacific Beach. In 2015, he opened his first Breakfast Republic.

Adding to his breakfast empire, Engman also will launch North Park Breakfast Company at 3131 University Avenue in the coming months, as well as a new concept - Pizza Republic - that will open nextdoor to his North Park Breakfast Republic, focus on America's favorite flat bread, and is anticipated for summer 2017.

The Encinitas location of Breakfast Republic will offer 3,500 square feet of interior space with a 700 square foot outdoor patio and is anticipated by the end of November. The 707 G Street location in downtown San Diego is nearly 3,000 square foot and should unveil by the end of 2016/early 2017. The Carmel Valley location will open at the space at 6025 Village Way, Suite F101, and is 3,100+ square feet. It should open by April 2017.
