Cohn Restaurant Group To Open San Diego's First 100% For-Charity Eatery

March 21, 2017

We recently broke the news that San Diego's Cohn Restaurant Group was opening a tri-concept at its former 100 Wines space in Hillcrest - a bistro/speakeasy/taco shop dubbed BO-beau Kitchen + Caché & Libertad Tacos a la Brasa. It has now been announced that Libertad will be San Diego's first 100% for-charity restaurant.

Cohn Restaurant Group founders David & Lesley Cohn have been in the restaurant industry for nearly 35 years and currently operate more than 20 restaurants in San Diego, Hawaii and Southern California. The husband-and-wife power couple are also avid philanthropists. In 2014, Lesley was honored by the National Restaurant Association's Educational Foundation for the group's philanthropic efforts with at-risk teens through the Garfield High School Foundation, which the couple co-founded in 1996 to provide culinary skills for at-risk youths. The foundation has graduated more than 2,000 students. The Cohn Restaurant Group is also know for supporting more than 350 non-profits in the San Diego community during its tenure.

Libertad will be an upscale taqueria designed and managed by Philippe Beltran that will serve an eclectic menu of tacos on housemade tortillas using proteins cooked over an open flame on a custom wood-fire grill. The restaurant has also taken the idea first instituted by Portland's The Oregon Public House, and will donate one hundred percent of the profits from Libertad to a monthly-changing, area-based charitable organization. Charities will be required to submit an application for consideration with a short video, and, if chosen, will receive net profits from the month, no less than $3,000. The eatery is anticipated to open by mid-May.
