After Less Than Year In Business, The Smokehouse & Bar At The Historic Laundry Rebrands At San Diego's Iconic Hotel Del Coronado

March 20, 2024

After less than a year in business, the Smokehouse & Bar at The Historic Laundry has rebranded at San Diego's iconic Hotel Del Coronado.

Last summer, Hotel Del Coronado debuted a new BBQ restaurant in the space that long housed the resort's onsite laundry building. Dubbed Smokehouse & Bar at The Historic Laundry, the 157-seat restaurant served a menu of barbecue, including an array of slow smoked meats, pulled pork, brisket, jalapeño sausage, ribs, and chicken, as well as dishes like smoked poutine with smoked cheese curds, smoked queso dip served with a giant pretzel, and smoked corn fritters. Most food was prepared inside an onsite food truck with smoker.
The Smokehouse & Bar at The Laundry building also houses an 1880s-restored wooden bar from a defunct hotel in Pennsylvania and served Prohibition-inspired craft cocktails. The restaurant didn't seem to warrant rave reviews during its short tenure. It had a 2.8 rating over 44 reviews on Yelp and a 3.4 with 22 Google reviews.
Last week, Smokehouse & Bar at The Laundry transitioned to become The Landry Pub, offering a tavern-style menu with items like wings, loaded nachos, salads, sandwiches, fries and desserts. From the bar, expect an array of $12+ beers on tap, as well as cocktails and wine by the glass and bottle.

"The Laundry space was always intended as a flexible one, where The Del team could experiment with concepts and casual offerings (not a hard and fast traditional restaurant space)," explained a representative of Hotel Del Coronado. "This new concept will continue to be local-friendly, and will also offer (all) local beers on tap in addition to an American menu."

Hotel Del's Laundry building was originally built in 1919 and was powered entirely by steam. In addition taking care of laundry needs for the hotel, there was a fleet of five trucks that served Coronado Island residents until public service ceased in 1973. The building was restored in 2021 as part of the resort's $400 million renovation, which revealed original brickwork, the original conveyor system tracks above the restored wood floors, and exposed signage dating back to 1925, which was displayed near the restaurant's bar.

While there has been no specific reason given for the sudden rebranding of Smokehouse & Bar at The Laundry, it may have something to do with Hotel Del turning its attention to the installation of a new branch of NOBU on the property. A new, 3,700 square-foot location of Nobu Japanese restaurant is currently being constructed in the beachfront space that long housed Sheerwater within San Diego's 136-year-old Hotel Del Coronado.

Smokehouse & Bar at the Laundry was located at 1500 Orange Avenue on San Diego's Coronado Island. For more information, visit hoteldel.com/dine/smokehouse-laundry.
