Community Leaders Celebrated with the Pride Spirit of Stonewall Awards

San Diego LGBT Pride is excited and proud to announce the 2012 Spirit of Stonewall Award Recipients.  The awards are designed to honor local individuals and organizations that have made a positive impact on San Diego's LGBT community.

The San Diego Pride Awards, now popularly known as the Spirit of Stonewall Awards, are presented annually by the San Diego LGBT Pride Board of Directors to recognize individuals and organizations who contribute to the LGBT community through their leadership, activism and fundraising efforts. The formal ceremony at which the awards are presented has become a "Who's Who" event during Pride Month.

This year’s award recipients are:

Sen. Christine Kehoe
Champion(s) of Pride – Senator Christine Kehoe and Jerry Turner
This award is given to an individual or individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the LGBT community over an extended period of years, or who have made an exceptional contribution over the past year.

Friend(s) of the Year – Dr. Aaron Bruce, Congresswoman Susan Davis and Tess Banko
This award is given to an individual or individuals who do not identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, but who have stalwartly supported the LGBT community over an extended period of years or the past year.

Stonewall Service Award –Safe School Task Force and The Imperial Court de San Diego
This award is given to a group or organization, which may or may not identify as specifically LGBT, but which has greatly supported the community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year.

Community Service Award – Joe Foster and Joey Powers and Linda Perine
This award is given to an individual or individuals who are recognized as "up-and-coming" leaders within the community, or whose contributions to the community over the past year carried significant impact.

Charles McKain
Lifetime Achievement Award (Posthumous) - Charles McKain

Awardees will be honored at the Spirit of Stonewall Rally, Friday, July 20th at 6:00 pm between Harvey Milk Street and University Avenue.  There will also be a reception at the W hotel, Tuesday, June 26th from 6:30 – 8:00 pm where awardees will have the opportunity to reflect on their collective accomplishments.   Members of the public are welcome to attend both of these events.
