Celebrity Owned Fat Sal's Deli Set To Debut on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach

November 3, 2012

Growing up in New Jersey only a short distance from Rutgers University Campus in New Brunswick, I had my fair share of  'fat sandwiches' as made famous by the Rutgers' "Grease Trucks."   So when we saw that a small eatery named Fat Sal's Deli was moving into the location previously occupied by the less-than-impressive Maria Juana's Cafe on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach, we at SanDiegoVille had to get to the bottom of it!  What we found is that this east coast inspired, gluttonous deli is the brainchild of actor Jerry Ferrara (Turtle from HBO’s hit show Entourage) and two of his lifelong friends.

Josh, Sal and Jerry
Hailing from New York City, food enthusiasts Sal (Fat Sal), Josh Stone, and Jerry Ferrara set out with the goal of bringing mouth watering, over the top food to L.A.’s hungry residents.  Fat Sal's is a health-unconscious sandwich stop that opened its first location in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles near UCLA in the Summer of 2010, and has since been a go-to late night grub stand of faculty and students alike.  With the success of their first location, they decided to move south to the lively Pacific Beach area of San Diego, right in the heart of bumping Garnet Street.

"We chose PB because it fit the Fat Sal's desired demographic," explained co-owner Josh Stone.  "It is a young town where there are always people walking around, and most importantly, it's a late night town."

Fat Sal's plans on opening at 956 Garnet Avenue (adjacent to Filippi’s) in Pacific Beach in the beginning of December 2012.  They intend to be open until 3-4am on the weekends.

Traditionally 'fat sandwiches' are hero rolls filled with combinations of comfort/bar food staples such as mozzarella sticks, cheesesteak, burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, etc., etc.   The menu at Fat Sal's deli stays true to form with a variety of mixes and matches and even a Big Fat Fatty challenge for $49.95: Finish a 27 inch garlic hero towering with cheesesteak, cheese burgers, pastrami, chicken fingers, bacon, mozzarella sticks, fried eggs, jalapeno poppers, fries, onion rings, chili, marinara, and fat sauce, all in under 40 minutes, and the sandwich is free and you can invent and name your own 'Fat Sandwich'!  Only recently has someone been able to consume this beast, and he did so with 5 minutes to spare (video clip on Fat Sal's Facebook).

At Fat Sal's, the 'Fat Jerry' has been named the crowd favorite.  Mixing cheesesteak, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, bacon, ketchup, and a fried egg, this beast is named after co-owner Jerry Ferrara and is a deal for just $8.95.  Fat Sal's offers plenty of other menu choices including pizza rolls, fry concoctions, hot dogs, burgers, wraps, and even salads.
