Any Given Sunday | Forget the End of Football With These San Diego Brunch Offerings

Chicken and waffles at Uptown Tavern

February 24, 2013

It’s been a couple weeks since the NFL season had its grand finale in New Orleans but for some of us the season has been over much longer than that (sorry Chargers fans). Has the lack of football left you feeling empty? Look on the bright side, several San Diego eateries are stepping up to help fill the void. Football will be back eventually, but in the meantime create a new Sunday tradition at one of these hot brunch spots.

Grab three of your closest friends and head to Uptown Tavern in Hillcrest for their 4-4-4 deal.  It’s easy: four people order four entrees and the table gets a get a $4 bottle of champagne. With plenty of delicious options to choose from, you should have no problem rallying a group for brunch. Try one of their specialty Bennies like the Short Rib, complete with horseradish cream, spinach and a chorizo hollandaise. The Southern-inspired Tavern Chicken N’ Waffle boasts free range chicken tenders served alongside a white cheddar and bacon waffle, topped with garlic butter and a Woodford Reserve-infused maple syrup.

Angry Orchard bread pudding French toast at barleymash
One of the Gaslamp’s hottest party spots is barleymash and they make no exception for brunch. Check out Sunday mornings for “Wake ‘N Bacon” from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Live Reggae music starts at 11 am and continues until 2 p.m. The Bloody Mary bar offers endless combinations. Consider the B'Fast Burger, a half pound beef patty smothered in aged cheddar and topped with two fried eggs, applewood smoked bacon, and bourbon brown butter hollandaise. Satisfy your sweet tooth with Angry Orchard Bread Pudding French Toast. Think the name is a mouthful? Just wait ‘til you take the first bite. Made with Angry Orchard Hard Apple Cider, then drizzled with sweet agave cream cheese and topped with seasonal berries, you’ll wonder why you weren’t having beer for breakfast before.

Absolute Bloody Mary from The Duck Dive
Some like it hot. Turn up the heat this month and try the Absolut Bloody Mary Bar at The Duck Dive in Pacific Beach and decide just how hot you like it. Pick from Absolut Vodka, Absolut Citron, or Absolut Peppar, and your choice of cheese, bacon, and salt. Pair it with their Breakfast Street Tacos, filled with slow roasted pork loin and belly, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, avocado, and tomatillo salsa verde.

PB Alehouse roofdeck
While waking up with a rattlesnake would generally cause concern, it makes for a great morning at Pacific Beach Alehouse. See what’s shaking when you order the Rattlesnake Burrito, a twist on the Southern California favorite. Stuffed with eggs, bacon, pico de gallo, jalapeños, herbed cream cheese, tomatillo cream, this burrito bites back.  Cool the burn with a Tropical Mimosa, made with champagne and kiwi passion fruit juice.

View from deck at Brigantine Del Mar
Enjoy brunch with a view at the Del Mar Brigantine.  Indulge in the three B’s: beach, breakfast and bottomless mimosas.  The champagne flows since bottomless mimosas are only $3 with the purchase of any entrée.  Get a taste of the islands with the Coconut-Macadamia Crusted French Toast, stuffed with chopped macadamias and toasted coconut.  Or indulge in the savory Smoked Salmon Benedict.  Smoked salmon is layered with grilled tomato, creamy parmesan spinach atop of a toasted bagel and finished with sundried tomato hollandaise sauce and crispy capers.  The $3 bottomless mimosa special is available at all Brigantine locations.
