April 25, 2013

The spiciest weekend of the year is returning and will be “hot, hot, hot” as Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo celebrates 30 years! Continuing the success of the 2012 celebration, this FREE festival extravaganza will once again extend from two to three days of dynamic “fiesta-ing”. The 30th Annual Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo will kick off on Friday, May 3rd, 2013 at 5:00 PM with All Night Happy Hour and Taco Tuesday specials and continue through the weekend on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM and Sunday, May 5th, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This FREE Fiesta will feature three stages with live entertainment, over 10 bands, traditional ballet folklorico dancers, equestrian shows, a mercado with over 100 retail and food booths, beer garden, and Lowrider Lane, which will all transform the streets into the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration north of the border!

The fiesta begins on Friday evening with Old Town, San Diego's favorite restaurants participating in a special Happy Hour featuring Taco Tuesday specials and a chance to win Taco Tuesday FREE for a year – that’s 52 tacos! Make sure to visit Cafe Coyote for some creative Margaritas or Fiesta de Reyes for tasty tacos or one of the other Old Town restaurants on Friday, May 3rd, 2013 beginning at 5:00 PM for the ultimate Cinco de Mayo Happy Hour! Restaurants located throughout Old Town will be prepared for your arrival and ready to serve up the best cuisine and drinks including specials on Corona, Pacifico, Tequila Corralejo, El Jimador, Frida Kahlo Tequila and Cointreau.

The fiesta will resume on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM and continue into Sunday, May 5th, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Everywhere you go, music will be playing and you can salsa over to one of the two event stages where you will be entertained with sizzling flamenco beats, Norteno flairs and traditional Mariachi music. The Cafe Coyote Stage located on San Diego Avenue and Conde will have you dancing through Saturday and Sunday with bands such as Navy Southwest, Chris Rubio Productions, Radios Silent, Polyester Express, Nitro Express Band, B-Side Players, Haute Chile, and more! You won’t want to miss the Ballet Folklorico Competition starting at 9:00 AM on the Fiesta de Reyes Stage; the mariachi music of Rojas Charros and Mariachi Imperial de San Diego; guitar stylings of Malamana and Latin A Go Go; and more.

In between the music make sure to explore the museums, specialty shops, and the lively streets of the bustling Mercado where you can purchase an array of merchandise: handmade leather pieces, beautiful jewelry and many more treasures. Take the family on an old-fashioned stagecoach ride or venture over to Lowrider Lane where you will be amazed by the glistening rims and gravity-defying hydraulics of these custom art masterpieces, as well as Lowrider bikes, which are highly customized bicycles with a long wheelbase and stylings inspired by Lowrider cars.

As you head to the Children's Stage for dance performances, eating contests and magic acts provided by Rings 76, you'll pass by balloon artists, face painters, and musicians. Stop by any of the interactive activity booths and let the ninos participate in exciting educational games and crafts. Some of the activities you will encounter are the Birch Aquarium talking about sharks with fossils, teeth & skin; Music Together will be teaching children different songs to perform every 20 minutes with handmade instruments; A Colorful Universe will bring out the artist in everyone with ceramic painting activities available; and more!

If you are 21 and over, cool off with a refreshing ice cold Corona or Pacifico in the beer garden or become a tequila connoisseur in the high-end tequila sampling area. And once again Red Bull will be joining in the party with their “Fiesta de Futbol”! They will turn Old Town Avenue into a soccer arena! Marvel at the professional soccer players' skills as they go head to head in special exhibition games exclusive to the Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo.

There won’t be any time for a siesta at the 30th Annual Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo with so many specialty stores and museums to explore in Historic Old Town.  Latin fever is spreading like wildfire and you won’t want to miss out on this opportunity to be surrounded by the history and culture of Mexico!
