The seaside Mexican resort, Rosarito Beach Hotel & Spa, located 30 miles south of San Diego, is known for a number of things - its iconic hotel, being the location for the movie "Titanic" and world-famous Puerto Nuevo-style lobster, among them. On Sunday, October 26, from noon to 7pm, the Rosarito Beach Hotel will combine surf with turf when it hosts in its oceanfront gardens the Steak & Lobster Festival, with Mexican music, dance and food from 10 area restaurants. Admission is free and a plate of lobster, steak and drink costs only $20!
The event marks the October start of fresh lobster season, which lasts through March. Puerto Nuevo-style (or Baja) Pacific lobster, originated more than 60 years ago in what was then a small fishing village 10 miles south of downtown Rosarito, and has since become world famous. Puerto Nuevo has grown into something like a lobster lovers' Disneyland, with almost 30 restaurants specializing in serving the tasty crustacean, split in half and piled high, accompanied by generous portions or rice, beans and tortillas.
The Rosarito Beach Hotel Steak & Lobster Festival is organized by CANIRAC, the Rosarito restaurant association. Among confirmed restaurants participating are Hotel Las Rocas, La Guerita, Azteca Restaurant from the Rosarito Beach Hotel, Mi Jacalito, Los Molcajetes and Puerto Nuevo II. Tickets for food can be bought in advance at participating restaurants or at the festival.
Those wishing to stay at the 500-unit hotel during the festival can take advantage of some great rates. Throughout the remainder of the year, standard rooms in the Coronado Tower are offered for $69 and deluxe condos in the Pacifico Tower from $99 from Sunday through Thursday, based on availability and excluding holidays. Friday and Saturday night rates are $20 higher. All lodging packages include a Fast Pass for easier border crossing, plus two children 12 and under can always stay free with parents. Those who want to add dining options to their stay, can chose the fall special, which includes daily getaway dinners for two plus breakfast. Rosarito Beach Hotel celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2015.
