Oceana Coastal Kitchen Now Offering Waterfront Dining at Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa in Pacific Beach

February 3, 2015

Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the new multi-million dollar waterfront restaurant at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, is now open in Pacific Beach. Under the culinary direction of Executive Chef Steven Riemer, the coastal cuisine includes a dedicated cold bar featuring fresh seafood favorites as well as playful interpretations of classic dishes highlighting local produce and ingredients. Embodying a true California experience, the breezy 8,200 square foot indoor/outdoor restaurant incorporates an ocean-inspired design including an 800-gallon aquarium (soon home to fluorescent jellyfish) and showcases stunning unobstructed views of Mission Bay.

Chef Steven Riemer’s impressive portfolio boasts more than 25 years of culinary experience at two of Southern California’s most notable AAA Five Diamond resort hotels (The Lodge at Torrey Pines and The Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel). He has had the privilege to cook alongside culinary icons Pierre Troisgros and Paul Bocuse, modern-day pioneers Yvon Goetz and Christian Rassinoux, and most recently as Executive Sous Chef with longtime friend and mentor Jeff Jackson at A.R. Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines.

Casual, simple, and homegrown - Executive Chef Steven Riemer’s playful interpretation of classic dishes at Oceana highlights the purity and flavors of local California produce and a commitment to sustainable ingredients. Upon entering the light and airy space, guests are greeted with a 25-foot long cold bar serving an expansive selection of oysters, fresh sushi, seafood platters and specialty items, such as yellowtail crudo, sesame sea bass ceviche, king crab legs, tuna carpaccio and more.

Complementing the cold bar, Chef Riemer’s menu features a thoughtful selection of dishes from the land and sea. The Cold Smoked Niman Ranch Pork Chop pairs perfectly alongside goat cheese grits, spiced apple and toasted slaw, the Two Duck Risotto is complemented with duck leg confit and Japanese pumpkin flavors, while the Seared Arctic Char satisfies with buckwheat soba, shitake mushrooms, ginger dashi, scallions and braised daikon. The menu also offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

Much like the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa itself, Oceana’s cocktail menu evokes the spirit of tropical islands in the South Pacific with tiki-inspired sips such as a Mai Tai, Hemingway Daiquiri, Tito’s Sunshine and more. The bar also offers a straightforward selection of tried-and-true classics including the Aristocrat Manhattan, Revolver, Boulevardier and Classic Margarita. Rounding out the beverage program, Oceana presents an extensive selection of California wines (more than 50 labels, with nearly 30 varietals by the glass) as well as many of San Diego’s most notable craft beers on tap, including a signature brew, Oceana Pale Ale, custom made in collaboration with Karl Strauss.

The indoor/outdoor restaurant embodies a true California experience. Delawie Architects, Dempsey Constructions and Kristine Smith Design Studio (The Lodge at Torrey Pines, Disney Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel) designed the space to bring the outdoors in with ocean-inspired colors, textures and materials. Dempsey Construction, a San Diego-based company, provided general contracting services to the project.

Ranging from casual to upscale, the restaurant features several distinct dining areas including a quartz-topped cold bar imbedded with mother of pearl and sea glass. The focal point in the main dining room is an impressive 800-gallon aquarium, which will soon be home to fluorescent tropical jellyfish. A large sliding window opens to reveal unobstructed views and gentle breezes from Mission Bay. The main dining room includes a combination of upholstered banquettes and loose tables featuring custom Hawaiian made Koa tabletops, as well as chairs and stools that were handcrafted in Bali. The restaurant also features a 12-seat private dining room and a 16-seat semi-private dining area with a chandelier made from large blown glass discs suspended from the metal framework. A palette of calming blue and green hues, custom lighting and wall sconces designed by local artist James Stone complete the look.

Oceana Coastal Kitchen offers an all-new alfresco experience for San Diego diners, complete with sleek booths and tables with sweeping waterfront views, along with an adjacent lounge featuring flickering flames from tiki torches and lava rock fire pits. Located just a few steps from the bayside walk, the patio boasts a dog-friendly atmosphere complete with water bowls and even a food menu for four-legged friends.

As an added convenience, all guests dining at Oceana Coastal Kitchen receive complimentary valet for zero-stress parking. Check out the menus below and visit Oceana at the Catamaran Resort, located at 3999 Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach. For more information, visit catamaranresort.com.
