A New Board Game And Comics Themed Bar & Restaurant To Open In Hillcrest | Tabletop Commons Debuts This Month

April 2, 2015

Get ready to get your game on! Tabletop Commons is currently revamping the space at 1263 University Avenue in Hillcrest, formerly occupied by Commonwealth Ultra Lounge, and before that, The Range, and has secured experienced Executive Chef Miguel Valdez (100 Wines, The Red Door, The Glass Door, Anthology) to lead the kitchen of San Diego's only board game and comic book-themed bar and restaurant.

Owned and operated by Evan Jones, Tabletop Commons has revamped the space to offer an industrial design, a library of over 100 board games, Wii U stations, themed murals and a focus on happy hour specials.

"It occurred to me that even though San Diego is a Mecca of pop culture and home to the largest comic book convention in the world, I couldn’t think of a single place that catered to that population year round. After a lot of thought and a lot of research I decided I should open a bar with a tabletop gaming and comic book theme," explained owner Evan Jones.

Executive Chef Miguel Valdez, formerly of 100 Wines, has constructed a menu highlighted by comfort food favorites like poutine, a fig jam burger and chicken and waffles, as well as shareable items, happy hour specials and decadent desserts. There will also be a weekly bottomless mimosa brunch.

Bar consultant and certified cicerone Chris Prell (Bagby Beer, Stone Brewing Co.) has assisted in upgrading the location's former tap system from 3 to 7 taps, which will be reserved solely for rotating local brews. Also there will be a unique lineup of craft cocktails with game and comic themes.

At Tabletop Commons, expect to see viewing parties for such TV hits as Game of Thrones and Walking Dead, specific game nights, game reviews and demos, cosplay events, and everything a nerd could ever want, plus booze and delicious food.

Tabletop Commons plans to open on Wednesday, April 15. For more information, visit tabletopcommons.com.
