Eating Vegan Or Vegetarian Doesn’t Mean Skimping On Flavor At Sammy's Woodfired Pizza

Sammy's Brie Pizza
June 11, 2015

In our quest to uncover restaurants that serve food that is equal parts healthy and tasty, we were led to Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza restaurant. Unbeknownst to many, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza has menu items for discerning palates, health conscious diners, and those with dietary specifications. It’s rare to find a restaurant that caters to Gluten-Free eaters as well as vegans, vegetarians, and everyone in between. We wanted to challenge Sammy’s by only exploring their vegan and vegetarian options--a tough litmus test for most food purveyors. Here’s what we discovered.

Sammy's Shishito Peppers
We started our meal off with Baba Ghanoush (vegan w/lettuce cups), Parmesan Crusted Artichokes (vegetarian) and Shishito Peppers (vegan). A very eclectic assortment to whet our palates and kick-off our casual but upscale dining experience. Baba Ghanoush has Arabic origins and is similar to hummus in texture. It is made of eggplant, onions, tomatoes, olive oil and herbs. The Sammy’s version is a tasty ode to the traditional Levantine dish, and seasoned to perfection. The ingredients are fairly simple and you can taste every nuance of flavor. The Parmesan Crusted Artichokes were tasty as well—a bit on the dense side for a starter, but we finished the entire plate. The artichokes were served with a creamy goat cheese and herb dressing. The Shishito Peppers were also fantastic. It’s hard to go wrong with a produce that can stand alone, but Sammy’s locally-sourced Shishito Peppers were a stand-out thanks to the wok’d exterior and sesame seed dipping sauce. The toasted sesame seeds were a smart complement to the flavorful peppers.

Red Quinoa Salad
For our main course, we opted for the Red Quinoa Salad (vegan), the Brie Cheese and Truffle Oil Pizza (vegetarian) and the Burrata and Pesto Pizza (vegetarian). The Red Quinoa salad features fragrant vegetables like golden beets, tomatoes, red onion, wild arugula, parsley, mint and scallions and is dressed in a vibrant Citrus Chili Vinaigrette. Very delicious. The Brie Cheese and Truffle Oil pizza was our absolute favorite dish. The earthy black truffle aroma was a nice touch with the creamy brie and sautéed mushrooms. The Burrata and Pesto pizza was also scrumptious. This was a seemingly simple pizza, but not shy on flavor, with organic tomatoes, basil pesto, burrata and house-made tomato sauce.

We truly enjoyed our dinner out at Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza. What a surprisingly flavorful endeavor for the vegan and vegetarian eaters out there! We’re so happy to find a place with options for eaters of all kinds.
