On Thursday, September 10, local fishermen captured an unusual encounter with a pod of about 30 orcas approximately 5 miles off the coast of Point Loma, San Diego. In the video, you see the killer whales seemingly playing a short distance the boat before swimming around and under the boat and eventually chasing closely behind the boat as it starts to move.
"You better go. He's right under us still! He's right there! Go go go," one of the fisherman can be heard shouting to the boat's captain.
It is uncommon for orcas to be seen off the San Diego coastline, but the warmer waters brought by this year's El Nino has driven larger fish closer to shores, which the orcas may be hunting.
