The online citizen review aggregation site, Yelp, has released its Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. in 2016 list, and eight San Diego County restaurants made the list, including Phil's BBQ, Coop's West Texas Barbecue and Oscar's Mexican Seafood. Yelp released it's inaugural Top 100 list in early 2014, and San Diego County had eight eateries listed that time around, followed by nine in 2015.
"Yelp’s list of Top 100 Places to Eat in the US for 2016 honors businesses that rank so highly in the Yelp community’s opinion that they have earned the status of 'must try within this lifetime.'"

To determine Yelp’s Best Places to Eat in 2016, the site analyzed which places were the all-time most popular and well reviewed on Yelp, similar to 2014, whereas for the 2015, Yelp considered only the reviews for the year prior. Businesses from across the country were compared using a ranking that looks at both the ratings and the number of reviews while accounting for quality, popularity, and statistical fluctuations. To localize the list, only reviews written by users whose profiles list their home location as within the reviewed businesses’ country were factored into the ranking. Businesses must be primarily a restaurant or place to eat a meal to be included on the list and must abide by Yelp’s Terms of Service and Content guidelines. If a business with multiple locations appears more than once on the list, Yelp would keep the highest ranked location and mention the others in a footnote. Unlike Yelp's list from 2015, which unearthed the best places to eat on Yelp based primarily on their performance in recent years, this year’s list looked at performance since the founding of Yelp in 2004. The 2016 list is a combination of classic favorites and new up-and-comers that garnered lots of positive attention. Businesses marked as "Hot & New" both made the Top Places to Eat list for the first time and were added to Yelp within the last two years.
In 2015, San Diego locations listed on Yelp's Top 100 included Bobboi Natural Gelato in La Jolla (#8), Yoshino Japanese Deli in Carlsbad (#21), Tacos El Gordo De Tijuana BC in Chula Vista (#29), Vitality Tap in Downtown San Diego (#49), Eddie V’s Prime Seafood at The Headquarters in Downtown San Diego (#57), T-Deli in Hillcrest (#68), Embargo Grill in Sports Arena area (#70), Beyer Deli in Bonita (#79), and Mister Falafel in Clairemont (#89).
In 2014, San Diego locations listed on Yelp's Top 100 included Zia Gourmet Pizza in Normal Heights (#100), Sushi Ota in Pacific Beach (#52), Yoshino Japanese Deli in Carlsbad (#38), Alforon in Rolando (#25), T-Deli in Hillcrest (#23), Tacos El Gordo in Chula Vista (#15), Coop's West Texas Barbecue in Lemon Grove (#14) and Oscar's Mexican Seafood in Pacific Beach (#13).
