The Corner Drafthouse Debuts In Bankers Hill

June 30, 2016

Get ready to pull up a seat at the newest gastropub in San Diego's Bankers Hill neighborhood - The Corner Drafthouse - set to swing open today at 495 Laurel Street in the space previously occupied by Hexagone. Just around the corner from historic Balboa Park, The Corner Drafthouse is a down-to-earth space offering American pub fare tailored for foodies, 70 taps of craft beer, and unique signature cocktails.

Running the show at The Corner Drafthouse are managing partners Executive Chef Dan Sobek and David Creviston, who along with former La Valencia Chef De Cuisine, Mark Pultz, plan to “wow” the neighborhood with seasonal, farm fresh West Coast fare. Along with their down-home favorites, a wall with over 70 local taps will showcase some of Southern California’s best brews. There will also be a creative cocktail menu featuring seasonally inspired, house-made infusions and exceptional wine offerings.

“After years in fine dining, I now get to serve the type of food that everyone can enjoy,” says Sobek, who has spent most of his career at ultra-luxury hotels, including the Dorchester Hotel in London and The Waldorf Astoria in New York City. He also served as Sous Chef for Top Chef Finalist Kenny Gilbert at the Capella Hotel in Telluride, Colorado and also managed the kitchens during the opening of New York City’s Five-Diamond, Five-Star Setai Fifth Avenue. Sobek planted his new roots in San Diego, and is excited to immerse himself in this first restaurant ownership venture.

"We’re all about good food and drink, and we believe in keeping it simple," explained Sobek. "Our seasonal, farm-fresh West Coast fare begins with thoughtfully sourced ingredients combined to create familiar, down-home favorites. We add a few spins along the way, but always circle back to our mission of creating honest, scratch-made favorites that guests will crave."

The Corner Drafthouse believes in keeping things simple and letting the food speak for itself. Scratch-made favorites will include shareable plates, salads, sandwiches and entrees such as Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, a loaded Cobb Salad, Short Rib Grinder Sandwich, BBQ Bacon Burger and their signature Fish ‘N Chips.

Managing partner Creviston is no stranger to the area, as The Corner Drafthouse is his third independent restaurant project in San Diego. David is responsible for design elements, construction and execution of operations. He is also a managing partner of The Bier Garden of Encinitas, which has received multiple awards, including “Best North County Restaurant/Bar 2014.”

Indoor/outdoor spaces will incorporate operable windows, along with three patios for al fresco dining to take advantage of San Diego’s coveted climate. They’ve incorporated plenty of creative spaces, bringing upcycled design materials to the table, and natural textures throughout will reflect their intentions to make every guest feel right at home. The Corner Drafthouse will cater to every type of social dining and drinking experience, from intimate dates to group gatherings, offering comfy booths, bar seating and community tables. Located just minutes from Downtown San Diego, they will be open for weekend brunch, weekday lunch, and dinner every night of the week.
