Primitive Smoke BBQ Now Making Waves In Pacific Beach

January 28, 2017

New to Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach is Primitive Smoke BBQ, a counter-service eatery that was recently opened by two culinary school graduates, offering all-natural, always fresh, hickory & peach smoked meats and a traditional take on classic barbecue.

Raised in Montana, Primitive Smoke owner Brandon Haynie always dreamt of opening his own restaurant. After getting a degree from Le Cordon Bleu in Scottsdale, Arizona and working in the industry for 6 years, Haynie met Chef Jermaine Spotwood, a graduate of San Diego Culinary Institute, while working at The Grand Del Mar. An Oklahoma native with over 15 years of cooking experience, Spotwood teamed up with Haynie to offer the Pacific Beach neighborhood authentic barbecue.

Primitive Smoke sits within the very quaint former Lil Orbits space at 1037 Garnet Avenue in the heart of PB. The menu has a variety of hickory and peach wood smoked meats made in a Southern Pride smoker, including pork spare ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, hot links and chicken, as well as sides like potato salad with fire roasted pimientos, bacon-bourbon baked beans, green chili macaroni and cheese, southern cream of corn with hickory smoked bacon, and more. There are also specialties like the Primitive Cocktail layered with pulled pork, baked beans and coleslaw, and the Primitive Indian Taco with smoked brisket, baked beans, tomatoes, barbecue crema and shredded romaine lettuce.

Primitive Smoke BBQ is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11am until they sell out. For more information, visit primitivesmokebbqsd.com.
