Pacific Beach's Iron Pig Alehouse, a hotspot for drool-worthy Texas-style barbecue and a top-notch list of San Diego craft beers, is adding Soul Food Sundays to its lineup of weekly specials, which also includes Fried Chicken Tuesdays, Pastrami Thursdays, and an incredible daily happy hour.
"Soul food to me is food that comes from your family, your background. where you grew up, your childhood," explained Iron Pig Executive Chef Rick Daniels. "It sticks to your ribs and gives you memories. BBQ itself is soul food. So, we are expanding our menu on Sundays with additional soul food options for the community. We did a soft start last Sunday and had an amazing response."
Building on a menu of incredible barbecue, Iron Pig Alehouse is expanding its down home hospitality in another way with the addition of Soul Food Sundays. Each week starting at 5pm, the restaurant will offer a soul food special plate, including dishes like pork chops with cheddar grits, greens and mustard bib sauce (served April 2 and pictured below); shrimp & crawfish étouffée as well as pork belly with fried green tomatoes, creamed corn, arugula and Fresno chile salad (4/9); fried red snapper with succotash, crawfish poblano and Tasso ham relish (4/16); chicken & waffles (4/23); and fried catfish with two sides and Texas toast (4/30) (dishes subject to change).
The weekly specials at Iron Pig will still include a daily happy hour from 3-6pm when most beers are $4 and there are food specials on items like the pulled pork sandwich, as well as Fried Chicken Plate Tuesdays and Pastrami Thursdays, which customers (including us!) have grown to love. Iron Pig will also soon add a weekly smoked fish special to the line-up.
