After a successful debut with the opening of the first area location in The Shops in La Jolla Village late last year, Los Angeles-based Mendocino Farms sandwich market opens their second San Diego outpost today at 11am in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center.
Mendocino Farms was founded in Los Angeles in 2005 by husband-and-wife team Mario Del Pero and Ellen Chen. The sandwich and salad shop now has 14 locations throughout Los Angeles and Orange County and two in San Diego, with three more area branches planned to open in the coming years. The company is now heavily backed by Whole Foods Market and is currently working on an expansion that includes four locations for Northern California, with more also in the works for LA and San Diego.
Mendocino Farms’ menu consists of a wide-variety of sandwiches and salads, everything from classics to foodie favorites and seasonal artisanal creations. Their core values are reflected in extensive efforts to source fresh produce and ingredients from local farms. The Del Mar location features an updated kitchen that will allow the eatery to serve exclusive items not available anywhere else. There is also a 25 foot living wall and a patio with games like corn hole and foosball. Additionally, a wider variety of craft beer will be featured including local San Diegan beers, as well as soft-serve ice cream from Sweet Rose Creamery. Favorite menu items include the Kurobuta Pork Belly Banh Mi with braised, caramelized Kurobuta pork belly, housemade pickled daikon & carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, jalapenos, chili aioli on panini-pressed ciabatta; and The Chicken MBT with roasted Mary's organic free range chicken breast, local Gioia fresh mozzarella, house marinated red peppers, basil pesto, tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, Scarborough Farm’s greens on ciabatta.
In celebration of the grand opening, Mendocino Farms will be offering an exclusive collaboration salad created by Campfire restaurant Executive Chef Andrew Bachelier. All proceeds from this salad will benefit The Farm Lab at Encinitas Union School District. Additionally, the first 100 people in attendance for the grand opening on Thursday will receive promotional items.
