From The Founders Of San Diego Based Delimex, A New Taquito Eatery Is Heading To North Park

March 25, 2018

From the creators of the San Diego-based Delimex brand of frozen Mexican treats, El Tianguis Rolled Taquitos is a fast-casual eatery opening in North Park this Spring.

Oscar Ancira Sr. founded Delimex Holdings in San Diego in 1984. The company was originally a supplier of frozen tamales to warehouse clubs like Price Club but added taquitos to its menu in 1986, and the rest is history. The tightly rolled corn or flour tortillas filled with meats and cheese became the company's flagship product and one of the highest selling frozen foods in club stores. Private investment firm Fenway Partners aquired Delimex in 1997 before selling it to the H.J. Heinz Company in 2001. Today, Delimex is one of the most ubiquitous grocery store frozen taquito brands.

Fast forward to present day as Oscar Ancira Jr. aims to repurpose his family tradition for the 21st century with the opening of El Tianguis Rolled Taquitos in the city where it all began. El Tianguis will be designed in the theme of Mexican local markets, or tianguis, set up like a bright and festive bazaar with an open kitchen where diners can see fresh corn tortillas being made using an automated machine before rolling up taquitos using a variety of fillings like shredded beef, chicken, cheese, as well as vegetarian and vegan versions. Topped with sour cream, lettuce, cheese, guacamole and salsa, taquitos will be available in orders of three, five, eight, twelve, and in larger amounts. There will also be an array of soft drinks for purchase, including hibiscus tea, horchata, Mexican coke, and Jarrito soda. Based on the success of this original location, more outposts may be opened in the near future around San Diego.

El Tianguis Rolled Taquitos hopes to open by early May at 2810 El Cajon Blvd., Suite E, in San Diego's North Park. For more information, visit eattaquitos.com.
