The Caliph Karaoke Bar Announces Impending Closure

December 9, 2018

San Diego's longstanding The Caliph, a karaoke and gay bar in Hillcrest that has been in business for nearly 60 years, has announced that it will close at the end of the month.

Open since 1960, The Caliph has been a Hillcrest destination for karaoke and live piano music. Recently a developer took over the building at 3100 Fifth Avenue with plans on building a housing complex. The Caliph will permanently close after business on New Year's Eve, December 31. The bar has been owned by Sherman Mendoza since 2003. Before that, it was owned by Warren Phillips, who purchased it in the 1980s.
