Project Bar & Grill Ends Short Run In Hillcrest

January 9, 2019

Previously operated as The Brew Project for nearly three years before rebanding last Spring, Project Bar & Grill has ended its short run in San Diego's Hillcrest community, shuttering earlier this week.

In August 2015, Beau Schmitt and Mike Sill took over the Victorian-era house previously occupied by Chef Rich Sweeney's R Gang Eatery to open a bar and restaurant aiming to give patrons the opportunity to take a San Diego brewery tour without leaving their seats. Opened in October 2015, The Brew Project celebrated the craft beer culture in San Diego with 24 taps devoted to local brews, as well as a full cocktail list using locally-distilled spirits and a menu of San Diego-inspired dishes. The Brew Project reconceptualize into Project Bar & Grill last June, shifting the focus from craft beer to put a larger emphasis on cocktails and food.
After hosting patrons for Monday evening's NCAA College Football Playoff National Championship, Project Bar failed to open the following day, leading to speculatation later confirmed that the restaurant was done for. Earlier this week, we announced that a former GM of the company was launching his own craft brewery in Miramar.

There is no word yet on a new tenant for the 1902-era Craftsman house at 3683 5th Avenue in Hillcrest. For more information, visit projectbarandgrill.com.
