Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa To Unveil Bayside Cali-Coastal Restaurant This Spring

February 14, 2019

The Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa has announced the addition of a new bayside dining concept primed to be the island's premier Cali-coastal restaurant. Scheduled to open in Spring 2019, ALBACA: Alta California Kitchen will feature a menu designed by new Executive Chef Rafael Corniel and Restaurant Chef Aaron Obregon. The resort will also add a new outdoor pool bar called Auga.

The name, "ALBACA" and "Alta California Kitchen" comes from a time back when the Californias were one and the regions were designated as Alta and Baja. The new concept will serve the best of what the area’s terroir offers with a modern interpretation that fuses the many cultures that share it. ALBACA will present an ever-changing menu that "rolls with the tide" and utilizes seasonal seafood sourced from nearby Southern California and Baja waters. Additionally, locally sourced ingredients and a focus on health and wellness will inspire nutrient and diet friendly dishes. The resort's chefs aim for each dish to celebrate local farmers, fishermen and artisans by bringing a curated selection of the best of the Californias. Combining California cuisine with a distinct Latin and Baja flair, Chef Rafael Corniel, who was born in the Dominican Republic and Chef Aaron Obregon, born in Mexico, combine culinary styles on a rotating menu that blends their roots with a passion for San Diego’s waters and local farms.

Located just steps from the Coronado Ferry Landing on a quiet, tranquil side of the island, the new Cali-coastal kitchen will have a bohemian design and offer incredible views of the bay and downtown San Diego skyline. The restaurant will feature indoor-outdoor seating and a sun-drenched patio surrounded by fire pits and lush greenery to provide an island escape.

"We are thrilled to showcase our beautiful seaside setting and unique culinary expertise, in a whole new way,” said Hotel General Manager Nusrat Mirza. “Our new eatery will make a splash on the city’s dining scene and provide both travelers and locals with a restaurant that provides a delicious, creative menu, but also an unforgettable experience."

The introduction of the new restaurant comes nearly three years after the completion of a property-wide renovation, which introduced redesigned guest rooms, a new wellness center and the award-winning Spa at Coronado Island.  said that the project transformed the bayfront property into a sought-after Southern California health and wellness destination. The resort features three floors with 300 rooms, 28 cottages, 7 executive suites, 23 meeting rooms with 25,000 square feet of total event space. An outdoor pool bar called Auga will also be added to the property this year, offering a variety of fast-casual dishes and drinks perfect for an afternoon outside.
