La Central Urban Grill To Bring More Sonoran-Style Mexican Fare To San Diego's South County Starting June 3

May 30, 2019

La Central Urban Grill has been operating from a makeshift stand sited outside Novo Brazil Brewing in the South County San Diego neighborhood of Eastlake since April, but next week the Sonoran-style Mexican concept will unveil a full-scale restaurant on Main Street in Chula Vista.

From Sonora, MX-born restaurateur Rogelio Cañez  - who owns Sonora Express Meat Boutique in Tijuana and operates both La Catrina Tapas & Cantina and Burrology in North Park - La Central Urban Grill will offer a menu centered around all things meat. The restaurant will cook most proteins directly over wood coals to add flavor to the final product, with dishes from grill master Daniel Castruita ranging from tacos and tortas to smothered fries and a special burger. Highlights include the Rockefeller Burrito, a Sonoran style preparation with a fresh tortilla filled with grilled steak, shrimp, caramelized onions, guacamole and cream cheese. There is also the Ribeye steak marinated in salsa macha (red chili peanut sauce), then cooked directly over an open flame and finished with a sweet honey glaze. The new La Central will have seating for approximately 70 people.

La Central Urban Grill will soft open at 3733 Main Street in Chula Vista on Monday, June 3, from noon until 8pm. The new location will eventually add a beer & wine license, as well as weekend brunch with dishes like chilaquiles and fresh-made carnitas. The stand will remain at Novo Brazil Brewing at 901 Lane Avenue in Eastlake.
